Vaginal Packing After Hysterectomy?

Okay Sisters, I have another question. I have read lots of older posts, and many of them mentioned vaginal packing after hysterectomy, but I had not seen it mentioned in any of the more recent posts I read. Now I have seen it mentioned three times in the last two days. I am assuming not everyone has it, but it does seem that some people still do. So, for those of you who had your surgery in the last year or two, did you have vaginal packing? Can anyone tell me more about it? Is it still common practice?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Vaginal Packing After Surgery?

I didn't have packing, just a pad.
I believe they do it with procedures where they take the uterus out of the vagina.
If you don't have that as part of the procedure then you will probably just wake up with a pad.

Re: Vaginal Packing After Surgery?

I had none. When the nurse came in after being taken to my room, she looks at my chart and says 'no vaginal packing, so guess nothing to do'. I did have a pad with a little spotting but she removed that. I had the robotic like you are going to. Why some do I am not sure. Maybe they bleed more or are the ones that have more done like bladder or rectocele repairs.

Re: Vaginal Packing After Surgery?

Hi, I am 4 days post op from a vaginal hysterectomy and repair and had a vaginal pack. At my pre op visit my dr told me I'd have a vaginal pack post surgery and it was used to control bleeding. I'm pretty sure they only use them for vaginal hysterectomys.

I had the pack removed day 1 following surgery, very uncomfortable. When the nurse removed it just seemed to be a very length of gauze, took a few goes to get the whole thing out.

Re: Vaginal Packing After Surgery?

I had a vaginal hysterectomy, but I didn't have a vaginal pack. I had my uterus and cervix removed, so I have a vaginal cuff, but didn't have anything else done. I have no idea why some people do and some people don't, so I'm looking forward to hearing the answer...

Re: Vaginal Packing After Surgery?

I had packing after vaginal hysterectomy. It was very uncomfortable when they took it out. I had minimal bleeding so it was very dry - seemed like it was an extra, extra, extra long tampon. I was kind of miserable through the night but as soon as they took that and the catheter out in the morning I felt pretty good.

Re: Vaginal Packing After Surgery?

I had vaginal packing for my TVH. I also had my bladder sutured using my own tissue. Packing made me feel like I had labor pains, and it was removed the day after surgery. Didn't hurt to have it removed . I haven't had any spotting since coming home.

Re: Vaginal Packing After Surgery?

I had the davinci hysterectomy also and everything removed vaginally, I did not have packing, and when I got to my room I didn't even have any underware with a pad on, all I had was one of those bed pads under me. When I got up the day after surgery after they pulled the catheter out I had some blood on that bed pad, I had brought underware and pads with me so when I got dressed in my pj's i put that on.

Re: Vaginal Packing After Hysterectomy?

Unless they took it out before I woke up, no pack for me. I had a daVinci vaginal hyster. Doc said I lost very little blood during the surgery so maybe that's why no packing. Very little spotting afterwards. Didn't need it.
