Emergency Surgery at 0ne week post op!
What a crazy week this has been! I hadn't even really had the chance to write my update since having my TVH w A&P Repairs and sling placed on the 23rd (friday) and stuff keeps on coming.
First, surgery went great. Stayed three nights in the hospital, came home with a catheter and looked forward to having it removed on thursday. I felt "great" during the week and was up and around quite a bit. Tired, but great. And relatively little pain.
Then on Thursday I had the big excursion to get the catheter removed. Hurray, a free woman! I came home like a good little patient and took a nap. When I woke up around 1 and got up, I felt a trickle down my leg. I was disappointed thinking that my urine was leaking (old habits die hard!). When I got to the restroom I realized it was bright red blood, pouring out of me!!!
I had my nanny get the phone for me and called the doctor. I soaked through 2 med ob pads before the bleeding slowed to just heavy spotting. The doc said if it happens again, I need to be seen and to stay resting for the remainder of the day.
Fast forward to 7 pm. Sitting on the couch like a good little patient, I feel the gush again. Call the exchange and a lovely doctor calls me back that actually assisted in my surgery. He says come to the ER and he will see me.
Get there shortly after 8, he inserts a speculum (for all the women asking why they don't have an internal exam at their post op check ups - it hurts!!) and I am writhing in pain. He sees some blood, wants to pack me again with gauze packing and it will require a foley again. 12 blissful hours without the catheter have come to an end. They give me some morphine so they can do the packing and tell me to follow up with my doctor to have the packing removed in 24 hours. I am home just after midnight, exhausted.
The next morning, my dr. wants to see me. I am scared because I know he will want to "look" and the pain involved in "looking" is really beyond description. I go in at 11.15, and he determines that there is an artery exposed, pumping blood into my vagina. Only way to fix it is to go under general anesthesia and put a few more stitches in. I cry. He convinces me I will be "all better" after this and have no packing or foleys so he calls the OR and tells them I am coming right NOW and that they need to clear a room stat. Kinda scary.
I remember when he saw me in the waiting room and he smiled at me and I kinda tried to smile back and he looked at me and said "you had to dig deep for that, didn't you?" and he is right, I had to dig deep to feel good that day.
Anyhow, surgery happened in a blur and I awoke 30 minutes later feeling very good and alert with three new stitches in place. He told my husband that he got a good look at everything and it is all sealed up nicely except for that spot.
So.... that is my long update. I have a newfound appreciation for "taking it easy" as I may have been doing too much before. But, I really do feel good! And, I am grateful to my doctor for acting quickly and doing something that may seem extreme to make me better as quickly as possible!
Phew!

I am glad you are back home and now getting to rest and recover. I think you are lucky to have such a great and caring doctor to react and help you like he did.
You take care and pamper yourself
It will take time to heal so just enjoy the leisure.

Praying for you
Wow! What a story. I'm sure sorry for all of your agony, trauma and the extra surgery. I really don't think that you did anything to cause that bleeding though. I say that thinking back to how slow I was moving at the same point in recovery and you had a foley cath in. I rather doubt you were overdoing it with a cath in?!
Unless you lifted something extremely heavy, fell down a flight of stairs or did some type of aerobic exercise, something tells me that you weren't the cause of the misery. I'm not a MD, but I have to think that this was the reason all of the instruction papers we take home from the castle say to call immediately if you soak through a pad within a certain time period.
I just betcha that there are other ladies who've had this experience and that's why the caution is on the paper/s.
I prayed that all of this is resolved and that you can progress with your recovery with no more obstacles.
Blessings!
