38 years young and a possible hystorectomy?!

I am wondering if there are any others out there in there 30s that have had a hysterectomy. I am absolutely terrified at the thought. I had a laparoscopy done last Friday and the doctor told my hubby afterwards that she though my uterus should be removed. She mentioned fribroids, endometriosis and cysts on both ovaries. I will meet with my gynecologist to go over her findings/results this Friday (I was too out of it after the procedure/anesthesia) and I am very nervous. Please reply!

Hi angelnine, I am 40 and facing a complete hysterectomy myself in a couple of weeks. I am confident that this is the right decision for me. This is an individual decision and no one can make it for you. You should consult your doctor and then weigh your pros and cons. For me, I want to live a long life and I want my children to have a healthy mother and my husband a healthy wife. For me, I want to focus on new things, new experiences and joy. Too much of my time has been consumed with medical problems. The future is mine and can be yours. Get all the facts, then go for opinions but only after you really internalize everything.

Thank you for your replies! I am very nervous, almost to the point of not wanting to go back to my gynecologist this Friday to review her findings. I just don't know how to go about making such a decision. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired and yet I am deathly afraid of having to go through surgery. I have only spent one night in a hospital and that was when I gave birth to my son. He was born at 4pm on one evening and I begged the doctor to release me the first thing the next morning. I have never felt so out of control in my life!

I am 37 years old and had a total laposcopic hysterectomy with the removal of my ovaries on 3/29/07. With it being totally laporscopic I only had to stay one night in the castle. I had had a biospy done which showed nothing. My symptoms were very long and heavy periods with a lot of cramping to the point that it was hard to work. I was scared to death to get the biopsy report back. I have 2 sisters which are cancer survivors and this helped in my decision 100%. My gyno agreed to remove my ovaries when he heard of my family history. I went 4/13 for my 2 wk check up and they had found several undetected fibroids which he said had a 99.9% chance of becoming cancer with my history. and also I had adenomyosis which was undetected. He removed my uterus and ovaries and cervix. I feel that I made the right decision and so does my gyno. No more pain each month. Very little worry about following in my siblings foot steps.

I feel this is a very private decision. Weigh your pros and cons. I do know that most women recover from lap. better than adominal. So if that is an option for you you might want to research it.

You will be in my prayers and thoughts. Try not to worry. Go with the flow. It will make your decision a lot easier

The decision to have a hyst is not an easy one! It is a major, irreversible surgery that can have both a physical and emotional impact on your life. It is not a decision to be made lightly and since a hyst is not without complications, the pros and cons need to be weighed carefully.

I know it looks scary to see your doctor, so I would suggest taking someone with you. This way they can help you understand what your doctor has to say, as well as offer emotional support if needed.

And before you make a decision to have a hyst, I would suggest at least a second opinion. And since you have mentioned that your doctor has found endometriosis, I would suggest trying to see an endometriosis specialist if at all possible.

There may be options available for you that your doctor is unaware of but that a second opinion might know about. And if you have endo, you will want a very skilled surgeon doing your surgery if you choose to have one.

Endo can be very microscopic and has various appearances that not all doctors recognize. Since there is no cure for endo, the more skilled your surgeon, the better your chances of having as much as possible removed.

I had my hysterectomy in November last year. I was 38. My experience was a very positive one. I had a TAH to remove a large fibroid that was causing all sorts of bladder etc issues. The decision is a very personal one. I haven't regretted mine at all.

The only regret for me is that I had not had children. At the time I was in a terrible relationship and did not consider having a family an option. The relationship ended when I was in hospital and I have since met an amazing man who would have wanted children with me. Who knew my circumstances would change.

In any event, the likelihood of my being able to bear children was pretty remote anyway so I try not to dwell on it.

I found that women that did not have uterus related issues were not particularly helpful to talk to. Most women seem to have a strong emotional response to the thought of losing their uterus. Mine made me feel pretty awful most of my life and I was delighted to be told that I would finally be free of it.

The surgeon seemed very apologetic about abdominal surgery but it really wasn't anything to worry about. In hospital my pain was well managed and I have to say that I never really experienced much discomfort. A period was a much worse thing to endure.

I made an effort to lose weight and get as fit and healthy as possible prior to the surgery and I think that helped. I am now hill running. I never ran anywhere before in my life but now that my uterus is not dominating my body, I seem to be able to manage a lot more physical activity.

I feel considerably better about myself and my scar is barely noticeable although it goes almost from one hip to the other. My boyfriend is proud of me because he thinks I'm brave. In reality, the whole experience just wasn't a bad one so there really wasn't much to be brave about.
