calf pain day 8 post TVH

Hi everyone,

Woke up a little worried this morning
Frown

I had a TVH, anterior and posterior repair with mesh and splint, and a TVT done on the 15th Sep.

I woke this morning with right calf pain.
It's only mild but definitely there. It remains the same when I walk but gets less intense when I stretch out my toes.

I'm worried that it might be a DVT.

However, I'm young (36) and have been fairly mobile since coming home from hospital 4 days ago, and don't have a lifestyle history to put me at extra risk of DVT's.

I don't want to ring the doctor and sound like a hypochondriac, even more so, make my already tired DH drag our 3 children and I to the doctor so I could be checked, potentially over nothing.

Any advise?

At 3 weeks post op I was admitted to the hospital with a blood clot. My only symptom was pain in my inner thigh; I had no swelling or any of the other usual symptoms.

Please go the Emergency Room ASAP. They can take an ultrasound of your leg to determine whether or not you have developed a clot. Blood clots are serious and can be fatal. so please don't wait. Hopefully your pain isn't from a clot, but the only way to find out is to go to the ER.

Do not rub the calf. If there is a clot there you don't want it to break off and travel. Please keep us posted.

It's always better to err on the side of caution. I also had calf pain about 4-5 wks. post op following my TVH. I did call my doc and they did an ultrasound. It wasn't a DVT. The peace of mind I felt was worth it. I don't think your doc will think you're a hypochondriac. That is what they are there for, and I think they would rather you call with something of this nature, rather than hesistate, just in case it is something to be concerned about. Good luck!

(((hugs)))

Just came back from the doctor.

After checking me out she wasn't alarmed.
Based on the fact that my calf wasn't swollen or hot or red, in comparison to the other one, and because I could focus the pain in my calf instead of it being a generalised pain (apparently that's how DVT's present) and that I am young, and have no other predisposing factors for DVT's, determined that it was unlikely to be a DVT.

She gave me referral for an ultrasound of the leg but said only to get it done if my pain gets much worse OR if I have swelling, hotness or redness in that calf.

I'm relieved that it appears ok but felt silly - yes, like a hypochondriac....

Thanks for all your support

Don't fell silly, DVT is a very serious complication and it is so much better to get it checked out and find that it is nothing than suffer the consequences of ignoring it and finding that it was a DVT.

.....by then it could be to late.

When I had a DVT, I had no other symptoms. My leg wasn't swollen, hot or red. The only place I had pain was my inner thigh. I called my doctor's office several times over two days and was told not to worry, that because I had no other symptoms I more than likely didn't have a clot.

I did have a clot, and was admitted to the hospital where I had to stay for 8 days.

Can you have the ultrasound done anyway? Other symptoms don't have to be present for it to be a clot.
