Thick feeling of incision?

Ok, so this may sound like a dumb question but here it goes... Why does my incision (TAH, lower abdominal incision) feel thick? Is this just a stage in the healing process and if so will it eventually go away?

Re: Thick feeling of incision?

Mines feels the same, my tummy also feels tender and number, it's just over 4 weeks since mine so hoping it will all settle down soon. Will look forward to hearing from the ladies further along than we are.

Re: Thick feeling of incision?

I believe this is just a stage. I remember it going down after my c-sections. My incision is currently at the same point so you are not alone!

Re: Thick feeling of incision?

It thins out with time. I used a scar cream and massaged it gently to help with the thinning out. Mine isn't totally smooth feeling yet but it is getting there.

Re: Thick feeling of incision?

I'm hoping my incision changes a little bit...it's closed up, but the top layer looks like the skin is folded over and glued together, not like an actual scar. There's also some scabbing, though the pieces are starting to fall off. I'm still freaked out by the numbness though... not the fact that it's numb, just the sensation of touching the numb skin.

Re: Thick feeling of incision?

Mildred - Mine looked like that for a long time. Now I have a little extra line down the middle on part of it. Who knows what it is going to look like in the long run. Apparently, scars aren't mature until a year or more and I have the type of skin that doesn't heal well - I always have significant marking after. So that is why I am trying the scar cream and the massage.

You will get used to touching the numb skin. I know it feels really weird right now but you do get used to it. Some of my feeling is coming back very very slowly in that area so I am hopeful that I will regain sensation there. If you feel itchy at all, that is a good sign that feeling is coming back. Good luck with healing.

Re: Thick feeling of incision?

Thanks for the reassurance. Everyone who's looked at the incision says it looks great, so I'm assuming this is all normal. I haven't put anything on it yet--I'll ask the doctor when I see her on Friday if there's anything I can do to help it heal.

I figure being freaked out by the numbness helps keep me from messing with the scar!
