In or out!
Carolyn,
I had the same concerns to. I kept mine. I am 40 and hopefully have a few more good years left with my ovaries. My doc wouldn't give me a straight answer. He said I was right on the line of question because of my age and was kinda close to menopause. (You'd think that 40 was old, the way he was talking). My opinion is if they are healthy and look good when they get in there, keep them. I left it up the the doc and what he thought, but as you've probably found, there are differing opinions here, but mostly you'll find most women say, if they are good, leave them!
Good luck on your surgery
Janie

ovaries-to remove or not to remove??(surgery date: 01/14/02)
Carolyn, this is a dilemma many of us have had. To keep or not to keep. I can only give my experience and opinion....if your ovaries are healthy it is a good idea to keep them You also need to take into consideration your family history...any history of ovarian cancer? I don't think there is any proof that your ovaries quit working when the uterus is removed. If you don't have to go into surgical menopause, which I understand can be pretty rough, why put yourself through it? I am 50 and did keep my ovaries even though I was having many symptoms of menopause. They were not unhealthy though...no cysts, no cancer, etc. My doctor advised me to keep mine, but I know all doctors don't always have the same opinion.
In the end, it is a decision only you can make. It isn't easy, but I think you will come to a peace about what is right for you.
Best wishes to you..
s

ovaries-to remove or not to remove??(surgery date: 01/14/02)
hi there
my thoughts and prayers are with you for your coming operation.
i had a tah with fibroids last march, and i was addiment that i have my ovaries removed, but the doc explained that if they are healthy, leave well alone and let the body function as normal, he explained that if they looked bad he would remove them, but they were fine,
im now 10 monthes post and i feel better than i have done for years and years, i feel a twinge each month ,,, i dont know if this is ovulation or what? but i do know that im not pmt, i could have killed before the op, but that has all gone now, i was worried about ovarian cancer, and thought that having them removed would stop that problem, but they explained to me , that if they are healthy there is no reason for them to turn cancerous, i can only tell you about myself, the decision has to be yours, i am 40 years old and feel like im 16 again, just a shame i dont look like it LOL.
hugs wendy xxxxxx
