Anxious about hysterectomy recovery in bed blues
Im not real nervous about the actual surgery, its the recovery that im anxious about. Being in bed for weeks is very depressing for me. Im a very outgoing person so Im worried that being complacent for a long time is going to depress me. Does anyone else feel this way?

Re: Hysterectomy recovery in bed blues
Stay positive and take projects to bed. It's amazing what you do all the time that can be done while taking a break. You'll do fine ! I answered emails, worked from PC, made phone calls, caught up with friends, paid bills, planned for 'date nights,' etc. but I never get bored , made lists, always something needing done.

Re: Hysterectomy recovery in bed blues
I am 5 days post op and depending which way they do your hysterectomy . You should only be in bed the first day are so the more you are up and moving around the quicker the body heals. Yes I am tired sometimes and having a few little issues . But I stop and rest. Do not let yourself lay around . Get up and move around and rest when you need to. Do not let it get you down. After 5 days of recovery I am doing pretty good. You will be fine I promise.

Re: Hysterectomy recovery in bed blues
Totally agree, I would recommend to only be in bed at night to sleep (except teh first few days). Even if you don't feel the best, at least rest on your sofa, etc.
As some sisters posted and your Doc might also mention it, walking is extremely important for the recovery, gets the gas out, helps with circulation, etc.
There is no reason why you should spend your recovery in bed, it not healthy for the mind either!

Re: Hysterectomy recovery in bed blues
When my gynecologist first told me I would need a hysterectomy, the first question I asked was, "How long's the recovery period?" I was horrified when she said six weeks and blurted out that I'd go crazy if I had to stay in bed that long. (Literally true in my case: I live with chronic depression. Being active and spending time outdoors are part of how I manage it.)
My gyn laughed and said, no, no, no! Six weeks means that the first two weeks, you go for short, frequent walks. The next two weeks you go for longer walker. The final two weeks you can walk as long and as far as you want, you just have to still be careful about lifting more than 10 lbs.
As it turned out, she was completely right. In fact, a nurse showed up at my bedside the morning after I had surgery - I had abdominal surgery, so I had a 3-day hospital stay - and "suggested" that we go for a walk around the ward, which we did. Then she "suggested" that I try sitting upright in an armchair, so I tried that. I didn't last too long before I went back to bed. That afternoon, we did it all again.
Days 2 and 3 I was more alert, walked laps around the ward on my own and spent the rest of my time sitting upright in the armchair reading. The day after I got home, I was outside walking around the neighbourhood. I couldn't walk too fast or far and I had to stick to flat ground, but I was outside and I was moving. When I wasn't walking I sat outside reading, sewing and playing with my cats, or I sat inside at my computer. I took naps pretty regularly the first week, but I was never in bed unless I was actually sleeping.
13 days after surgery, I walked almost a mile in 15 minutes to get to a local clinic to have my staples removed. After that, I decided it was time to start adding steep hills to my walking repertoire so that I could get to the supermarket (I was running out of yogurt) and my plot at the community garden.
By the time I saw my gyn oncologist 27 days after surgery, I was going for 1-2 hour hikes on wooded trails. He cleared me to return to work (part-time) with restrictions on lifting more than 30 lbs, also to bike and swim. The weight restriction lasted another two weeks.
Everyone's recovery was different, but I definitely found that getting enough outdoor time and finding *appropriate* activities for each stage of recovery was not a problem.

Re: Hysterectomy recovery in bed blues
you also don't have to spend all of your time in bed. I took naps regularly, but that was the only time I went to bed.
The rest of the time I was up in the living room, reading, watching tv, visiting, or in other parts of house.

Re: Hysterectomy recovery in bed blues
I am 3 days post op and was looking forward to resting in my bed guilt free sleeping all day. Husband is a work and kids are with my mom for a week. That was blown away by morning after surgery! I was chatty, moving around my room, tending to myself. I had lapriscopic assisted surgery. 3 super small incisions. I have several bouts of energy a day like this and then I rest. I sleep if I feel like it. Not at all as much sleeping as I was expecting. I am even planning fundraising for my child's team. I tend to myself all day nothing I have to watch myself for overdoing it. Everyone heals different so best prepare for having sleepy times and energy times.

Wow I am still learning how to navigate this site so sorry for delay on response. Thanks everyone for all your personal experiences. It's calming to know that recovery isn't all in bed ad I was thinking. Thanks again.

Yarn. Tons of yarn. Oodles of it. If you've ever wanted to learn to crochet or knit, now's the time. (Music was also a biggie for me, but you don't say that you play an instrument or which one.)
