Average "Out of Commission" time for Abdominal Hysto?
I talked with my gyn this afternoon with questions about my upcoming hysterectomy. He informed me that a vaginal hysterectomy would not be an option due to the size of my uterus and fibroids. He also said that he would advise against a laproscopic hysterectomy because of the size/shape of my uterus and fibroids. So, it looks like I will be having an abdominal hysterectomy--with the intention of leaving my ovaries and cervix in place.
I was chatting with my mom tonight about this. She had a TAH about 20 years ago. Mom is no whimp when it comes to pain, and definitely not someone who would look to take extra time off of work! In fact, she's a workaholic. Anyhow, she told me that it was six months before her gyn would release her to go back to work!!! We both have active careers, but this still seems exceptional to me. I'd like to see what others have to say, knowing that whatever will be, will be when it comes to my body's healing. I'm hoping it won't be six months, though!

Initial recovery for a TAH is 6 to 8 weeks. However, for full recovery I have read others say on this site can take anywhere from 6 months to a year.

Molly, I had an SAH like you are planning and my doctor told me 6 to 8 weeks recovery. He wrote me a note for 8 weeks. I am an elementary school principal so I have a fairly active job. With Xmas holidays in there, it will be 9 weeks by the time I go back to work. I think I will be more than ready then unless complications pop up.

Thanks, ladies! That really eases my concerns a bit. Knowing my mom, she PROBABLY didn't listen to all of the "don't do's" her docs gave her back then.

Molly -
6 to 8 weeks is initial recovery. In most instances you will feel tired when you go back to work and not be up to full activity levels.
I had a laproscopic surgery and went back to work at 6 weeks. I was exhausted for 2 more weeks (worked every other day from home). At 8 weeks could do a full week but came home really tired.
I didn't use the word "normal" until 11 months out.
I hope that helps.
G.

Re: Average "Out of Commission" time for Abdominal Hysto?
I took 6 weeks off and then part time with shortened shifts of my already part time job for another 2 wks.
Its now 4 months and I am working WFSS for a total of 21.5 hrs and I am exhausted on my days off. My job is physical and I am on my feet the whole time but its not that I get tired or ache, its more that I hit the wall!
I had a D&C, laproscopy and then a TAH/BSO vertical incision, everything including 2 nasty masses, fibroids, polyps, cysts.... removed in one piece, so I was clamped open pretty wide. I pulled an internal stitch early on, had a incision infection wk 3 and got gout in week 6.
I was literally pretty much worthless for most activities except walking (not steps) for the first 3.5-4 wks. I couldn't care for myself very well so I stayed with a friend for 3.5 wks.
You will hopefully have a better go of it.

Re: Average "Out of Commission" time for Abdominal Hysto?
I was off for 8 weeks, but I ended up with bladder issues which have kept me out significantly longer. 3 months after my surgery, I still get some pain when I do more than I should. It's a long haul...but from what I hear, it's well worth it in the end.

Re: Average "Out of Commission" time for Abdominal Hysto?
I was off for 6 weeks, after TAH plus ovaries, but went in two days early. My job is mostly standing and sitting, so I was fine. No heavy lifting, and you don't want to do anything involving heavy lifting for a while AFTER the 6 weeks. I hefted some plastic tubs this weekend and am paying for it with swelly belly. So please, take it easy, but 6 months seems excessive, unless you had complications.
Good luck!

Re: Average "Out of Commission" time for Abdominal Hysto?
I had a BOS -- my mom had a hysterectomy about 20 yrs ago and she said that the technique changed drastically from hers to mine. They cartorize now and things are done with healing in mind -- 6-8 weeks is the time off if you follow the doc and have no other complications.
