Already booked post hysterectomy surgery half marathon. Too ambitious?

Hi. I have been running for only a year now and will be completing my second half on mother's day. I plan on getting my hysterectomy in early June. Hoping that I don't need a TAH, I have already scheduled my next race for next February. It seems like it's not too ambitious when I read this thread but I have read other threads where I was starting to worry if I would have enough to train hard once I'm completely healed. Or really I should be just looking to complete. By no means am I a speedy runner. Thanks ladies. This is my first post !

Re: Already booked post surgery half marathon. Too ambitious?

Everyone heals differently seems to be the main theme of the recovery board. If you register for the marathon will there be a problem if you are not ready? I would plan positively and see how things go.

Good for you setting a goal! February seems realistic.

I hesitated because I feared "jinxing" my recovery. This is the first year since I started running four years ago, that I have not run a single race yet. It is so hard . It has been such a huge part of my life. Now that I am 6 days post op I need to set a goal myself. Kinda overdid it with regular around the house stuff with my kids yesterday so I am back to the couch. Scoping out dates for my next half will be part of my couch time. I am hoping to run a full as well but that all depends on when I can run normally again. If I can run my 4th Marathon in four years I will consider it a big victory.

Hi thanks for replying. If I'm not ready I lose the money I spent on it. Its a good amount of money. I'm happy to hear that you are doing so well after only 6 days post op. Continue to heal well and thanks.

Re: Already booked post hysterectomy surgery half marathon. Too ambitious?

Having a goal is good. I too had a total hysterectomy just 2 weeks ago and am signed up for a 1/2 marathon at the of July. I have no idea how well my body will respond to getting back on the road, I will respect it. But for now I love having something positive to look forward to

Re: Already booked post hysterectomy surgery half marathon. Too ambitious?

I had my TAH surgery on 2nd April and am recovery extremely well. I was going to the gym every day prior to my surgery to use the treadmill only because I don't like lifting weights or things like that but the treadmill was something that I enjoyed doing and would walk on the treadmill at the highest incline. I think that for me when I had my surgery was that after reading so many stories about recoveries the distress of not being able to get back to the gym for weeks and weeks sent me into a wave of depression. I was in hospital for 4 days and spent much of that time walking around, slow but at least I was walking. Once I got home I was walking every day and found that as the days past I was able to walk for longer periods of time but still I was keen to get back to the gym.

I was back behind the wheel of my car 9 days after surgery and found that I could drive my car safely and freely even if it was to go see my Doc and do local drives due to everything being so close to where I live but for the most part I was walking all the time.

Two weeks post op I headed back to the gym and on the treadmill once again. I am walking on the highest incline but walking slower than before so have found the balance in what my body will allow me to do even though I feel as though I am walking like a snail. I have been back to the gym every day so far and am feeling better all the time and also it has been helping my bowels out big time and has been helping to get things moving again much to my delight.

Everyone heals at different times and I am lucky to be recovering quite quickly and you know what having goals I believe is a very good thing and if a 1/2 marathon is your goal then I say hang onto that goal. Yes listen to your body and as your surgery will be in June and the marathon will be in Feb next year then I believe that all you need is to stay positive and hang in there.

All the best

Re: Already booked post hysterectomy surgery half marathon. Too ambitious?

I signed up for my first Marathon before my surgery! I have been running for 5 years now and it is a large part of my life! GOD, has used running to change me inside a nd out!! I'm 16 days post op and my Doctor is really really pleased with my recovery. I'm cleared to start walking longer and faster (using wisdom) than I can jog and finally run. Thankfully my race is not till November. PRAYING you all heal and are back out on the road soon!! GOD, BLESS!!!

Re: Already booked post hysterectomy surgery half marathon. Too ambitious?

You are very realistic in planning a half out several months for February. I signed up for one May 4th thinking my surgery would be early Jan, then it was mid-Feb, giving me only 11.5 weeks. I have done halfs before, and was going to be fine walking most of it. Just wanted to finish. I was in good condition going in and started walking short distances at 1.5 wks post surgery, then running 2-3 miles when Dr released at 8 weeks.
My half went great and while not fast, I posted my best time ever by 19 seconds. And ran my fastest 5k ever by almost 5 mins the following week :-) I was feeling strong, alive and like a real runner after being very sluggish last 2 years.

However, I must say that I am experiencing vaginal pressure this week and have an appt with my Dr this Monday. I am very concerned about possible prolapse. So taking it slower is better, and 7-8 months should give you good time to heal.

Re: Already booked post hysterectomy surgery half marathon. Too ambitious?

Hi! This thread popped up when I was browsing around and I wondered how your half marathon last month went?
My last post mentioned vaginal pressure that I was concerned with. Had it checked, all was fine and I am now just over a year post-op. I ended up running 5 half marathons, a Ragnar Relay and 10k last year. Shaved 24 mins off my half marathon time!! Training for my first (and only) full marathon in 5 weeks and will do 5-6 halfs and Ragnar this year, plus, some shorter runs. Still not speedy, but running is so much easier without the heaviness of fibroids!
