post-op throat infection?

Hi all...

I haven't had my hyster yet (maybe March depending on what the Feb. tests say). However, I did have a hysteroscopy on October 19th. For 3 weeks after I had a horrendous sore throat, coughing, the works. It went away and two weeks later is back again...swollen glands, sore throat, coughing...but the irritation isn't actually in my throat, it's more like at the top of my lung area.

Has anyone else had problems after anesthesia?

Cheers.

post anesthesia throat infection?

Hi DaniDownUnder,
You must be from my favorite continent.
Now, on to your problem. Yes! I went through this so many times, and I finally got it straightened out. First off, if you do get a severe sore throat after surgery, ask you doctor if he can put you on a steroid medication. That is the quickest way to heal your throat.

But, most likely your problem is that you are difficult to intubate. Your doctor probably has difficulty putting the breathing tube down your throat, and once it's in, it's probably rubbing against the inside of your throat.

You must emphasize your problem to your anethesiologist, strongly! I have found they don't always listen because they don't understand just how severe your throat pain is after surgery.

What solved my problem is that my doctor was able to use a smaller breathing tube. It made all the difference in the world! I had no sore throat at all after my recent 4 hour surgery!

But, you must really emphasize how bad your problem is to your doctor. They assume everyone has a sore throat after surgery, which is usually true, but they don't understand the severity of what we've been through.

I hope you get this worked out for your surgery. I was absolutely thrilled after my surgery 4 weeks ago. I always needed pain medication for my throat rather than my surgery procedure!

Best of luck to you!
Tracy
