Urine leakage

Hi everyone. I had my radical hysterectomy on October 22. It was done robotically and I am healing fairly well. My doctor said my surgery went great, with no damage at all to my bladder or other parts of the bladder system. He believes in keeping a catheter in for two weeks after the surgery so that there is no pressure from a full bladder to interfere with healing inside. Also with all the colace tablets and miralax he has me taking, no urge to strain. He said he likes to keep you as comfortable as possible. So, here is my question..I had my catheter taken out one week ago today. I have leakage that I never had before. My dr and primary both told me that it is normal to have leakage after catheter removal after having it in for a long length of time. I was told my bladder got lazy and has to get used to working on its own again and will eventually stop leaking. Have others experienced this? Everything I have read is about men and their problems with leakage. I was told it could take a few weeks, it's only been one and its driving me crazy.

Re: Urine leakage

I'm so sorry you're having this problem. Bladder leakage is distressing and I understand why you're upset. From what I've read of other women's posts on here, it does improve with time. The bladder just needs to learn to "hold" urine again, but the muscles will gradually function better. I think hysterectomy is really hard on the bladder, personally my bladder was extremely unhappy for many months post op. If it gets any worse, if you have bleeding or fever or pain, please call your doctor. Otherwise, just remember: patience is a virtue!
