Anyone have low iron counts now?

I'm almost 6 weeks post-op. I had tests run last week and just got the results. They said I had low iron counts. I'm supposed to re-test in one month.

I know with surgery you lose blood, etc. But was curious if anyone else had low iron post hysterectomy? And if so, did it correct itself? Or did you need to take further action?

Thank you!!

I had to have an iv bag of iron supplement while in the hospital. But nothing since.
This was after being put in my room after recovery room. Had a davinci so i know i only lost a tablespoon of blood. Dont know why my doctor ordered the iron supplement..and didnt bother to ask.

Re: Anyone have low iron counts now?

I have very low iron counts now. I am two weeks post-op and my dr is concerned. I have to take iron supplements and eat an iron rich diet. I have to go back in two weeks for a full blood workup to see how the levels are. I am hoping they go up.

Re: Anyone have low iron counts now?

Do you know what causes this? Im sorry to hear you are having a problem....and i am very curious how it happens. Like i said...the nurse came in and hung a small bag of iron supplement attached to my iv...but i never asked why. Just asked what it was.
I hope you will be ok...and it is nothing serious.

Re: Anyone have low iron counts now?

I know my endocrinologist kept asking how much blood I lost. I had a lap. The amount was on the surgical report. I asked what my iron numbers were. I was told 12.6 and 36.3. Any idea what those are? Is that what your levels happened to be?

Re: Anyone have low iron counts now?

I was told that I have low hemoglobin the day after surgery. I presumed it was caused by low iron, but they were unable to tell me anything. I am almost three weeks post op now and don't know if my hemoglobin is back up or not. I have taken an Iron supplement a few times since I have been home. I'll ask about it at my 6 week check up.

Re: Anyone have low iron counts now?

I have been anemic since November with a hemoglobin count of 9. For women, the normal range is 12-14 with the lower count of 12 usually reserved for women who are anemic during pregnancy. For men, the normal range is 14-16. I think the second number you mentioned, 36.3 might have to do with stored iron and normal ranges for that are in the hundreds. I don't know as much about that number, I just know my doctor felt it was way too low at 24. I have Googled "iron deficient anemia" and found some good information. It took me from November till the beginning of March to build my hemoglobin count from 9 to 13, taking iron supplements but continuously bleeding. My stored iron was still very low. I wish I could've gotten an IV bag of iron instead of being anemic all those months. My doctor told me I didn't lose much blood, so I'm curious as to what my levels are now. Good luck to you and everyone building your iron back up!

Re: Anyone have low iron counts now?

I had severe anemia for 6-7 months, which is one of the reasons why surgery was delayed. I took 3 Slow Fe tablets to increase the iron. The anemia was gone but the iron stores were still very low and my gyne said the would continue to be low as long as I was bleeding out every 3 weeks.

I lost 500 cc of blood, becoming anemic again after surgery. Still take 3 tablets of Slow Fe every day and will continue to do so until the anemia is gone and the iron stores are normal.

Being sensitive to even a bit of cold is just awful.

There are good websites, if you do a search, on what all the words and terms mean on your blood test.

Re: Anyone have low iron counts now?

I lost about a litre blood during my surgery and my iron levels were at 9. They did not give my a transfusion. During the first night post op, my blood pressure was very low too. I think my iron levels are still low even after 5 weeks as I feel very tired most of the time. I am now taking a herbal iron tonic, do not want to take pills as iron can constipate and I really don't want that.

Re: Anyone have low iron counts now?

Before surgery my hemoglobin levels were about 10.5. My dr. looks at 10 as the number we don't want to go under. I lost a lot of blood during surgery but not enough for a transfusion (thankfully). After surgery my hemoglobin level went down to 9.5. Again, dr said at 8 we do a transfusion. I am hoping it goes up soon. I have to have a full workup on the 1st, lovely because I hate bloodwork! I guess she will be testing the reserves at that point.

Right now I am taking Bifera iron supplements. I hate how iron effects my stomach so this is torture. I have been taking them since Tuesday and haven't gone to the bathroom since. I hope this doesn't last.

I really hope everyone can get their levels under control.
