Medical clearance?
I never had to get this before surgery. Why is it needed and what happens at this appointment? I know I should have asked this to my PCP but I don't like the ladies that work the front deck. They are a bunch of grouches.

Re: Medical clearance?
Is this the same as a pre-op? Standard for my hospital is to require an EKG, chest x-ray, blood work, and urine sample as well as a pre-op visit with a PCP to make sure there are no underlying health issues that would preclude surgery.

Re: Medical clearance?
They may just call it "medical clearance" but same as pre-op testing?? Every place is slightly different ( for my pre-op i only had a blood test...i didn't have a chest X-ray even though i am a smoker, no Ekg.....Just a blood test) However some people have other health issues that factor into whether or not surgery is safe and may need extra precautions.
Why is it most of them are that way??? Same at mine! You think they would have some compassion for women going into the office considering most women are there for some serious stuff!!

Re: Medical clearance?
Nope, my pre testing is at the hospital. I had my preop with my surgeon and pre admission testing at the hospital. I have to see my PCP for clearance. I have asked people that I know that has had surgery, and no one is able to help. It's driving me mad. UGH!

Re: Medical clearance?
Wow if it's not pre-op testing than I have no idea what it could be.
The women at the front desk of my doctor's office are wonderful...the surgical scheduler on the other hand...I think she took lessons in how to make the process more stressful for patients.

Re: Medical clearance?
I have a few clearances I need before my FFU (free-from-uterus) day in December. My hematologist needs to make sure my hemoglobin is high enough and have visit in addition to the blood work. I saw my lupus doc just last week and he wants to see me 2 weeks prior just to make sure my lungs are clear, etc... And I haven't had a lupus type lung problem in 10 years!!!! Then there is the pre-op visit with the gyne. Add in the blood test visit, etc... and it will feel like I am living at the doctors office. Well, it's a small price to pay to be FFU!

Re: Medical clearance?
Okay! I think you just nailed it. I was diagnosed with MVP (Mitral Valve Prolaspe) two years ago. I have the type that regurgitates. I have to be on antibiotics before a surgical or dentist procure. I bet that's what it's about. Thank you for cleaning this up for me. And thanks to the rest for trying to help. As for the front desk ladies. They are a pain and it does make me more fidgety dealing with them. I am so glad my Gyn office isn't like that. I don't see me PCP very often to give it a second thought, but with this. I have to deal with them an it's so bad. Especially with how emotional I am becoming the closer I get to my date.

Re: Medical clearance?
I too have MVP but didn't need an EKG this time (because they recently did one in the last few months) but I bet that's what it is about. I got two antibiotics during preop the day of and i questioned whether this was relating to my mvp or standard procedure. They said this was s serious surgery and for the hospital it was standard but would no doubt also be beneficial for my mvp. I would make sure the day you go in you ask the staff that is assigned to you about the antibiotics. i know your mvp will be in your chart but sometimes with so many people in and out and administering meds it's better to check.
