Prolapsed bowel -after hysterectomy
Is it possible to get a prolapsed bowel after having a hysterectomy. It is possible I had it before the surgery. I am having heaps of problems with my bowels and I can only make them move using laxatives and enema's. I have been to doctor and they are no help. I have a fullness all the time in my stomach and feel I never fully completely empty my bowels. Some advice if anyone else has this problem. I think it is called rectocele. ANyway any thoughts would be much appreciated. I am desperate!!!

Re: Prolapsed bowel -after hysterectomy
Not sure if that could be the problem. But I have had problems with constipation since surgery whereas I have never had problems until this surgery. If you find out any answers please post back here as I would be most interested.

Re: Prolapsed bowel -after hysterectomy
You're still early in recovery and probably still swollen. I had a real issue with that also. And my system shut down from the anesthesia and morphine ( I didn't ask for pain meds, they gave it to me anyway!)
My Dr had me taking laxatives twice a day as well as 200 mg of colace twice a day. Finally got dehydrated from the diarrhea (sp?) it caused.
I cut out the laxatives, started drinking prune juice in the morning, walked at least 1 & 1/2 miles a day, did some very gentle yoga and only took 200mg of colace at night.
It took about five days to get to some sense of normalcy.
I make sure I eat lots of whole grains, fruits & veggies and drink lots of water. If I don't walk ( finally up to 3 miles a day), I really know it.
Have your Dr check for the rectocele, but think about what you've been through and allow your body time to regroup.

Re: Rectocele, Found it at the Mayo Clinic Website
A rectocele occurs when the thin wall of fibrous tissue (fascia) separating the rectum from the vagina becomes weakened, allowing the front wall of the rectum to bulge into the vagina.
Childbirth and other processes that put pressure on the fascia can lead to a rectocele. A small rectocele may cause no signs or symptoms. If a rectocele is large, it may create a noticeable bulge of tissue through the vaginal opening. Though this bulge may be uncomfortable, it's rarely painful.
When treatment of a rectocele is necessary, self-care measures and other nonsurgical options are often effective. In severe cases, you may need surgical repair.
A small rectocele may cause no signs or symptoms. Otherwise, you may notice:
■A soft bulge of tissue in your vagina that may or may not protrude through the vaginal opening
■Difficulty having a bowel movement with the need to press your fingers on the bulge in your vagina to help push stool out during a bowel movement
■Sensation of rectal pressure or fullness
■A feeling that the rectum has not completely emptied after a bowel movement
■Sexual concerns, such as feeling embarrassed or sensing looseness in the tone of your vaginal tissue
Many women with a rectocele also experience related conditions, such as:
■Cystocele, when the bladder bulges into your vagina
■Enterocele, when the small intestine pushes down into your vagina
■Uterine prolapse, when the uterus descends into your vagina
When to see a doctor
When a rectocele is small, you don't need medical care. In fact, in mild cases, you may not even know you have a rectocele.
In moderate or severe cases, however, rectoceles can be bothersome, uncomfortable and, in a few cases, painful. Make an appointment with your doctor if you experience:
■A soft bulge of tissue that protrudes from within your vagina through your vaginal opening with straining
■A feeling of fullness or pressure in your rectum
■Difficulty emptying your rectum
■Chronic constipation

Re: Rectocele,
A rectocele happens when the rectum starts to prolapse (fall) to the front and pushes against the back wall of the vagina.
The symptoms are a feeling of fullness in the vagina and/or the feeling of wanting to push something out. Sometimes, it can cause constipation.

Re: Rectocele,
I Had a rectocele for years and the DR said one day it would need to be fixed. It kept getting worse, I could not have a normal bowel movement and was always afraid of accidents. Then the uterus dropped and DR said i needed a hyster. He repaired the rectocele and there is still tenderness after 10 weeks and it tore there the first time my husband and i "did it". But my bowel movements are back to normal and i would not advise against getting it fixed.

Re: Prolapsed bowel -after hysterectomy
I had a TVH a week ago and to be honest the biggest issue I have been having is moving my bowels. Last night I took a laxative and had severe cramping all night and still haven't gone! It has only been a week so I think I will give it a little time and talk to my doctor at my 2 week checkup!
