shrinking fibroids pre-op?

My surgery is scheduled for mid-December, and because of work restrictions I can't do it any sooner. My fibroids are so big, though, that I am miserable. I found a blog where the writer suggested that estrogen dominance was the cause of fibroids, fibrocystic breasts, acne, mood swings, etc., and said to detox the liver with various juices and extracts. Has anyone heard of this? I'm staying with surgery, but am looking to be a healthier me post-op. All of those symptoms apply...:

Re: shrinking fibroids pre-op?

Hi MsJ123 to HysterSisters!

I would talk to your doctor about shrinking your fibroids and see what they suggest. Tell them you are miserable, and need some temporary relief.

I have not heard of doing so with juices and extracts, and would be a bit cautious doing so.

Re: shrinking fibroids pre-op?

Hi MsJ123,

I've not heard of anything herbal etc. to shrink fibroids, although you could talk to a naturopath about it. I have just started on Fribristal to shrink my fibroids (I'm awaiting my surgery date still). My doctor has recommended it to help facilitate the least invasive method. It's been two weeks on Fribristal thus far and so far, so good. They recommend a three month cycle of it. I've not had any side effects so far and feel quite good on it. It's too soon to tell if the actual fibroids are shrinking yet, but will keep you posted.

Good luck!

p.s. I've done a lot of cleanses, including juice and liver cleanse and they did not help my fibroids

Re: shrinking fibroids pre-op?

I agree that you should speak with your doctor. Mine gave me a Lupron shot about 2 1/2 months pre-surgery and although my surgeon didn't specifically mention the fibroids during my pre-op exam, she did say that my uterus had gotten smaller (it's "only" at 14 weeks now!). Yes, Lupron will give you menopause symptoms (hot flashes, especially), but it's temporary and shirking the fibroids can only help when it's time for your surgery!

Re: shrinking fibroids pre-op?

I'm sorry that you're suffering. I usually seek natural remedies before pharmaceutical ones, but in the case of shrinking fibroids I have to say I'm very skeptical about those supposed natural cures. And it seems like the Luprin option may be just as uncomfortable as leaving the fibroids alone until your surgery. I also had several sizeable fibroids--the largest being about the size of a softball. My doc did a laparoscopic supracervical hyst and I'm healing well. However, because of the size and location of my fibroids the surgery did take about twice as long as she had anticipated (6hrs!) and I stayed in the hospital for 2 nights instead of being able to go home same day. Is there any sort of painkiller that might lessen your discomfort until December?

Re: shrinking fibroids pre-op?

Thank you, ladies! I had another ultrasound on Friday, so I plan to call the dr tomorrow if I don't hear from him first. I really appreciate your advice and support!
