Home, itching, and in pain--

Hi guys---so glad this board is here it has helped me in so many ways. I had a TAH/BSO due to abnormal periods for 20 years and severe PMDD/PMS both which effected just normal living routines. I had my surgery June 20th. I was shocked at how much pain I have been in. I came home the day after surgery with a cath. I finally was able to take it out yesterday and urinate on my own. My incision is so painful. I have taken pain meds all week but I am now changing to advil every 6 hours bc the pain meds are making me feel nutty. I am taking an antibiotic for bladder infection and I have terrible vaginal itching. It is driving me insane. Did anyone else have this much pain the first week? Did anyone else itch like crazy?

HUGS to fellow sisters?

Patti

Home, itching, and in pain--

It sounds like you may have a yeast infection, which is common after antibiotics. Please call your dr asap and he can prescribe meds or you can get it over the counter. Have you had a yeast infection before? I developed one after my hyst too, due to taking alot of antibiotics. As for the pain, it depends on how much work was done, I had ALOT of pain due to severy endo and ureter/kidney/bladder work also. Urinating was painful for about 5 weeks, don't lay off the pain meds if you need them, I took them for 4-5 weeks. If you like, you can alternate between pain meds and advil, so you won't feel so loopy. I was surprised by my pain also, altho the dr tried to warn me. I just assumed I'd breeze through like I had with other surgeries. That did not happen! I felt like I was deathly sick the first 2-3 weeks, had alot of fever/ rashes/ bladder pain, its just a long healing process. Call the dr if you need too, don't be afraid to talk to the nurse. I know you hear this alot but take care of yourself, this will be over soon enough. I feel great now, I'm almost 5 months post op now. I'll be thinking about you, Patti. Lora

Home, itching, and in pain--

Gran;

I can't say I have itching vaginally but I didn't know about an allergy to the adhesive on the tape they used for my bandage until they took it off... Now I have an itch where the tape was adhered to the skin, with blisters that oooze... Glad they are almost dried up after a few day...They were driving me crazy..

My bladder is always in some kind of pain and I have learned to ignore it. I have interstitial cystitis and take medication for my bladder anyway....

The only pain I seam to have no explanation for is near an incision site from last months Lap/cystoscopy.... about 1 1/2 inches below the incision for the hyster... Now why that would hurt I have no idea....

Yes, Patti........ the pain can be quite intense, especially if you've not had previous surgery through the same incision (C-section for example). Just rest and take your advil as you described, and you'll do just fine! As far as the itching goes, that's the skin healing and its completely normal. Please don't scratch. You don't want to open up any healing areas of your scar, nor transfer any bacteria/viruses that are on your hands to your abdomen. Oh, congrats on peeing without the catheter! Funny how we celebrate the most basic functions??? Every day, you'll feel better and be able to do more than you did the day before!

hth,
Barb
