Swelly Belly Band really a good idea?
Hey All!
I just returned from my pre-op appt, and the nurse told me I wouldn't need any kind of 'tummy garment' because I was relatively thin and usually only the heavier ladies needed swelly belly-type bands.
I thought to order one since I've heard so much good feedback on this site, but I wonder if the nurse knows more than I do. It stands to reason that the incision I will have (vertical from pubic to above my belly button) would benefit from some support, doesn't it? Some people say they don't have much swelling at all, so I don't know what to do.
I'm athletic, of average weight, very healthy and physically strong. I'm wondering if my physical condition might be the reason the nurse thought I wouldn't need the swelly belly band, but why wouldn't I have swelling but someone else would?
Are there any other athletic ladies out there who found they benefited from the swelly belly band after surgery - who had long vertical incisions?
Thanks so much!

Swelly Belly Band really a good idea?
I have a 3 1/2 inch vertical and I didn't get the band. I thought about it, but I didn't know ahead of time what kind of incision I'd end up with. Truthfully, my incision was so sensitive, I didn't even wear underwear at all until just last week. I didn't want anything touching it. My tummy pillow is still my best friend. I have one of those Sqush therapy pillows with the micro-beads. It molds wonderfully to the body. I got mine at CVS, but Wmart has some simular ones.

Thanks!
Thanks Gyspylady!
I've been reading so much conflicting information regarding the abdominal binders that I don't know what to do. Like you say, I thought the incision would be so painful that nothing could touch it, hence the suggested granny panties, which I went out and bought already. My incision is expected to be 4-41/2 inches long, very long... Anyway, happy recovery!

Swelly Belly Band really a good idea?
Startulip...I bought an abdominal binder because of a tip on this site.......I can't imagine not having it for the weeks I used it. It was TRULY my best friend. I, too was very fit and in shape BUT I'd still suggest to anyone having a vert. incision (mine is 5") to get one.
It will take over for your stomach muscles and give you the support you need. Seriously...Money worth spent....HUGS.Dianne

Swelly Belly Band really a good idea?
I had the bikini cut incision. I did order the swelly belly belt. What a great idea!! I love mine. I am petite, 106 pounds and thought I would have limited swelling. Boy, was I wrong. I have had a lot of swelling which is very uncomfortable. The belt is easy. You don't have to do much with it and it velcros so you don't have to hold anything in place. Great investment !!!!

WebbyElla,
Thanks so much for the tip! I was thinking the same thing as you. I actually went looking for abdo binders on-line and found they're recommended for any abdominal surgery, so it made sense to get one. Thanks for taking the time to let me know your experience. I'm going to go out and get one TO-Day!

Snshine,
Thanks so much for the insight. If even a tiny person with a smaller incision benefits from the binder, then that's all I need to hear! I hope you're doing well - man oh man, I sure wish I were you home 6 days post-surgery writing on the site! Sounds like you're doing well - wonderful!
