Hyster & Medication Side Effects

Hello everyone,
New to Hyster Sisters - joined today. I had a total hysterectomy 8/22 for breast cancer treatment. Began "the sweats" within a week post surgery. Been on Tamoxifen for 30 days now and the day/night sweats are intensifying and becoming annoying (not to mention the lack of sleep is making me a GRUMP.
I hear that antidepressants like Prozac are the trick - anyone out there have similar situation?

Had not heard about Prozac for that purpose, but it sure is helpful for other things! Maybe your doc has an idea. Hope it gets better soon.

Hyster & Medication Side Effects

I have breast cancer also. I am not on any HRT and am 4 mo out from total LAVH/BSO.. I feel like I cant sleep, my heart races, and I am plain old tired. I imagine its gonna be like this for a while, so I better hold on tight. I am so overwhelmed by all my breast ca. tx and tests, that I dont have time to think. I get mad too, where I never was like this..

My doc has me on Ativan for my nerves, and said maybe Effexor would help w/hot flashes, tho I havent tried it.. Supposed to be on Fosamax and Calcium, but became allergic to OSCAL.. whats next??

Hope you find peace on this journey..
Blessings..
Peachy

Dear Peachy49,
Good luck with your treatment. I see the Oncologist tomorrow and will be discussing medication options for the sweats and insomnia - will let you know how that goes. I'm back to work next Monday and I'm a bit freaked out about it as I break out in to a sweat over the littlest things. I now have the patience of a NAT and that isn't good when you're a Sr. manager in a large corporation.

Hi peachy49,

Hope everything gets better. I had a TAH/BSO on Aug. 22 and within 2 weeks had intense hot flashes / mood swings. My doctor put me on EstroGel, and it has been working great. This might be an option.
Good luck and know that everyone is here for you!!

Hyster & Medication Side Effects

Hi ((((Catherine)))))

While I do not have breast cancer, I am in peri-menopause. Due to a number of factors, including on-going issues with high blood pressure, my doctor has been reluctant to prescribe HRT.

Since my has been to the point of affecting my quality of life and my ability to function during the day, she prescribed Trazodone, an anti-depressant, about a year ago. Not only is the Trazodone helping me to get a good night's sleep, it's also helping to control the night sweats and hot flashes. I still get some flashes during the day, but it's not as bad as without the Trazodone. And it does help with the mood swings.

What it doesn't help with is the dry skin and hair. The brain has been relieved, to a point, with the increased sleep... but not completely. And I still have joint pains.

It's a good to discuss this with you oncologist: you can then find out what you can't take and what is safe for you.

I do wish you the best of luck with your treatment plan

Hi Dany,

Thanks for your reply. I agree that it is best to discuss everything with your Oncologist. Hearing what others have experienced and what works for them is also enlightening and educational. I got thrown in to this so quickly, the last 8 months of my life has been a blur.

The good news is the Effexor appears to be working for me. Today was my 5th pill and last evening was my first solid night's sleep since 8/22 (amen Father).

Best of luck to all my Hyster Sisters.
