suggestion on vitamin suppliments

I have decided that along with my new self, and new things to be health conciousness about, I would like to begin taking some vitamin suppliments.

For you hystersisters out there who do this, is there anything particular those of us with TAH BSO should really think about, or is a multivitamin going to get the job done.

I am also interested in the best absorbed calcium product out there, anyone know? I am lactose intolerant, so dairy is not going to be how I get more calcium!

Any ideas on what vitamins are the best, etc...would be appreciated.

kselibrary,

We had our surgery on the same day. You sound as if you are doing as well as I am. I have not gone back to work and will not until Nov. 14th. I am glad I chose to take off the whole 8 weeks.

As far as vitamens go, I have increased my vitamen C due to the fact that it accelerates healing. I am also taking an MVI and an iron supplement-due to blood loss in surgery.

As far as Calcium goes, I have been using the chewable kind lately-chocolate of course. CVS had them buy 1 get one free a few weeks ago. Prior to that was taking Citracal Ultradense tab w/ vitamen D-which is important for absorbtion. From what I understand, you need about 1200 mg. of calcium a day. I am also drinking soy milk that has calcium in it.

I lost my ovaries unexpectady in surgery due to endo we did not know I had. I am also on a Vilelle Dot-estrogen replacement.

Hope you are doing well. I know you must be as happy as I am it is over with. I am 43 and have been putting it off for years.

I that your precious pup in the picture? I love dogs

Sweet Pea in SC
TAH w/BSO for giant fibroid uterus weighing 1238 gms.
Vertical incision. Endo and adeno also found.

I started taking a vitamin pack about 2 months before my hyster. I was looking for Vitamin E because that also promotes healing. I am a diabetic and found this awesome vitamin pack at Costco called Nature Made Diabetes Health Plan. In a way I'm glad I have diabetes or I would have never looked at this thing and it has all sorts of vitamins (7 a day, I know that's alot) I should have been taking before I was diagnosed with diabetes. I have suggested it to friends who don't even have diabetes or have it in their families. I love this pack since I started taking it I feel like I have alot more energy!

I don't know if anybody else on here is from the UK or if this is available overseas, but I take a product called "menopace" which is for women in the Menopause. I had my hyst at 30, and have only had minimal hot flushes...although I can barely remember my own name from memory loss!
Hope this helps

I don't know if you need fiver, but Benefiber came out with Benefiber plus calcium. It has no taste. Mix it with water and it is not gritty and no taste. I love it.

Sweet Pea,

Yes, that is my dog! One of them, his name is Mac and that is him as a puppy. Hubby and I love this breed. You can see more pics of he and his brother Finn on this website on the photo section. If you click my name, and choose view photos, you should be able to see them. They are spoiled rotten and loved way too much. My kids have told me should something happen to hubby or I, they would only fight over the dogs!!!

We did have our surgery the same day. Glad to hear you are doing well. I have some scar tissue issues near the navel and other than that, I am doing great.

I too lost the ovaries [due to cysts and scarring] and am on the Vivelle Dot. So far, so very good on the HRT.

I didn't put the surgery off...I was patted on the head and told that my menopause was just 'going to be a hard one' for 5 long years. Going in for infusions, and iron and being anemic, as well as the pain...well, I knew it wasn't just menopause, lucked into another doc who cared and voila...found out what was causing it.

But I digress.

So Vitamin C helps with the absorbtion of calcium? When I get back to work [work at a library, hence my handle on this site] I will look more into this, but I'd really like to get started now. I did buy the chocoate chewy calcium too!!! I just wondered if it is the one that is best absorbed. I am really interested in that aspect of the calcium.

Queen,
I wonder if Costco has it for those of us that are not diabetic. With the Crohns I have to be careful and wonder if that many pills may not be too much for the old GI tract! My husband has mentioned those vitamins to me though, some guys he works with use them and swear by them. May be worth a try.

Cat -
You not only remembered your name, you remembered two names [Cat and Blade!] I have a touch of the brain fog from time to time too. I am going to blame it on being over busy instead of anything else, I've decided but I'm right there with you! I think there are vitamins for menopausal women out there! I'll look into that as well...thank you.

Connie,
I see the GI next week, I am going to ask him about the Benefiber, as opposed to the brand I use now. Another good suggestion.

Thank you all. People like all of YOU are what makes this site so great. Good information, given in a sweet manner. I appreciate it.

Hi
Iread everything I could get my hands on from reputable clinical studies of which supplements to take to promote healing. They are
All the B vitamins, Extra vitamin C, Vitamin A, )mixed study results on E right after surgery -wait about 2 weeks seems to be the concensus), Zinc, Calcium but make sure you always balance it out with its agonist magnesium either in a 1:1 ratio or 2:1 mag to calcium if you've never taken mag supplements-which by the way should be mag citrate, mag glycinate, or mag taurate (found in health food stores) because they are absorbed into your tissues better than the cheaper mag oxide ***Mag is also great for mitral valve prolapse, twitches, muscle "crunchies" and migraine***
Also Bromelain from Pineapple stems, arginine and glutamine which are aminoacids that promote collagen growth and tissue health and help you use the protein you eat. Extra protein is important at this time too.
I hope my research helps some of you have a quicker, less painful recovery. My surgery SAH was October 20 and I've followed my own advice w/ my Dr.'s approval and amd resting but feel Great!!!
Good luck.
