The best reason to remove the cervix is for cancer (that's why mine is being removed). Leaving the cervix in *can* result in mini-periods, but the doctor can do some procedures to reduce the chance of that. A good reason to KEEP the cervix is because it helps (physcially) support the other internal organs, thereby reducing likihood of prolapses later on. The cervix can also provide a little bit of hormonal support for later in life (I think that's what I've read). There are the pros and cons as I understand them.

I've read it is suggested for a woman to have a vault smear after having a hysterectomy. I don't think the AMA has made recommendations yet, but I'd think if cancer is involved, then it is highly recommended. I'm not positive, though. This is one question I have for my doctor.

Best of luck to you, and keep asking questions. The women on this site are aMAZing!!!

Pre-Op Questions

My doctor said that as long as my pap tests have been normal, and as long as I've been tested (and negative) for hpv, I could kep my cervix.

Pre-Op Questions

I could keep mine because it is supposedly healthy (until we get further tests back), but it hurts all the time and a PAP is excruciating. I could almost swear that it feels like they are using a hard bristled brush to scrub around on it during a PAP. I am opting to have it removed. For me it is a matter of hoping to relieve constant and or frequent pain.
