Re: want to shower but afraid to try stairs

I had a TAH, my doctor told me that I was only allowed, I think it was 15 steps a day. I was able to go up once a day to shower.
Have someone help you, especially since you had dizziness and nausea.
Here's an article on Showering After Hysterectomy that may help you

want to shower but afraid to try stairs

Thank you for sharing the info on showering. That helps a lot since my doctor never went into any detail. I didn't know I had to cover the incisions. Thanks again!

Re: want to shower but afraid to try stairs

Is there a landing between your two sets of stairs? Maybe you could have a chair there and sit a bit between flights.
I climbed stairs the day I got home from the hospital - I was expecting it to be difficult but it was actually very easy. I think that being used to the stairs in 'real life' helps. At any rate, I was up and down the stairs a couple of times a day from the start. But our situations are all different so when you give it a try just listen to your body. And when you do get there, that first shower feels really good!

Re: want to shower but afraid to try stairs

I have been going up and down stairs every day since day one ( I was not told not too). I am very careful of course and the first few days I did one at a time. I've never had any problems with stairs. Good luck and like everyone says, listen to your body.

Re: want to shower but afraid to try stairs

I have stairs also. I went up the day after surgery, same day I was sent home from hospital. Took my time, one step at a time and had someone behind me for each step. I was afraid too, but it wasn't bad at all. I didn't come back down for two days because there really was no need. But, I will tell you the shower made me feel soooo much better. I felt like a new person! I showered on day 3, the morning after going upstairs. It drained all of my energy, but I was so happy I did. It was day 5 that I came back down stairs, stayed down all day, and returned to my upstairs room at the end of the day.
I can do the stairs on my own now with no issues. I just go slow and take a few trips as possible. I try not to do more than once or twice a day. Some days I don't go at all if I am not up to it.
I'd say give it a try. You will know if you aren't ready. Listen to your body.

Re: want to shower but afraid to try stairs

I had TAH on 1/15, came home on 1/18. I went up the household stairs today, took a shower. Came back and have been testing since. It did wipe me for have day. I am currently staying with my mom but both here and at my house I have stairs to get to a bedroom and shower.

Just take them one at a time. Plan yo rest a little if you need to.

Re: want to shower but afraid to try stairs

I walked up the stairs when I got home 20 hours after surgery. I moved slow and managed them just fine. I live in a split level house, too.

Re: want to shower but afraid to try stairs

I used the stairs in the hospital with the nurse on day two. It was fine. Just keep it nice and slow, resting when you need too. My husband stayed with me for my showers in the first few weeks until I felt confident and had no dizziness.
