Hysterectomy Scheduled 8/3 and scared (age 29, in lots of pain)

My partial hysterectomy is scheduled for August 3rd. I have had problems for years with heavy bleeding and severe cramps but thing got worse back in March. I have had 3 c-sections and my dr decided to do a laparoscopy to look around. Basically the scar tissue has taken over and everything is stuck together. Needs to say I have been on pain meds for months and life has been different. This surgery is supposed to help and he hopes to save one ovary. I am only 29 and I'm terrified that life will be different. Will things be the same between me and my husband??? Will I gain a ton of weight?? Will I ever want sex again? I can't live with this pain especially since no one seems to understand how I can have so much "random" pain that never stops. But is it worth it to have this hysterectomy or do I learn to manage the pain? Anyone else have a hysterectomy in their 20's?

Re: Scheduled and scared

Briana I am in my 30s (39 to be exact for 3 more months hehe) and I'm nervous about the same things you are. My surgery is scheduled for Monday the 27th. Got my period today one last time (can you believe it?) and let me tell you I'm glad I did because it reinforces my decision to have this surgery. I'm in so much pain now and it affects my life NOW. So I'm gonna hope for the best for us. I've been reading this site for a few months and PLENTY of sisters are doing great post surgery.

Re: Scheduled and scared

Hi BrianaB to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site! All of your emotions, fears, nerves and concerns are very normal.

You are young to be having this surgery. You may want to get other opinions as you may have other options. Maybe another doctor can isolate the reason for the pain. You would hate to have this MAJOR SURGERY and then still be in pain.

To answer your questions:
Sex after surgery is different for every one. Some say it is better, some say it is worse, and everywhere in between. I had a TAH BSO (total abdominal hysterectomy (uterus and cervix removed) and both ovaries and both tubes removed). DH cannot tell any difference. For me, sex feels different. My orgasms are not as intense - I miss the muscle contraction of my uterus. But they are more frequent. We also have to use lubricant, which frustrates me.

Weight gain with this surgery is not a given. I had mine over 4 years ago, and I have not gained weight. I eat a healthy diet and exercise daily.

Just know that you are not alone in this. We are here for you.
