Re: Found out 2 days ago that I have to have a hysterectomy.
I was supposed to be out of work 4 to 6 weeks, but work is very busy. Since I have a desk job the doc let me go back after 2 weeks. I was ready bored to death !
The surgery was Monday morning at 7am and I got out of the hospital on Wed morning. I was supposed to stay till Thursday but I was doing so good that I was released a day early. I stayed home alone from the day I was released. Family, friends and neighbors were always checking in on me, but I had no problems. I quit taking pain pills rather quickly (Friday), My back surgeon says I have a high pain tolerance, so you need to take as much time as you need.
I was in shape and I guess that made the recovery much easier. I try to walk about 4 miles a day, and I do pilates when I have the time. This was also my 3rd surgery in 9 months so I had a good idea of what to expect.

I am trying to take it easy but unfortunately I have a big ego ! I think the office will fall apart if I am not working.. If I had the surgery in the summer I would have definetly taken more time off, but they wanted the surgery done quickly to relieve pressure of my bowels and this is a very busy time at work.
My only problem is spotting and being more tired than usual. I go to sleep at 7pm and get up at 5am !

Re: Found out 2 days ago that I have to have a hysterectomy.
I understand your pain- both mentally and physically. I had a hysterectomy scheduled and 4 days before canceled because although the pain was severe, the emotional pain (not having had children at 35) was becoming more severe than the pain.
My choice was to get my head straight-- try all options I can for treatment and then, once I am in better health (emotionally) make the final decision.
I'm learning that lots of people will give you advice on adoption, or other means of parenting.. these are all wonderful things- but, in the beginning their is TRUE loss - and losing your womb pre-children is something only someone who has experienced it can attest to..
My advice would be ALWAYS seek a second or third opinion before a major surgery-- but, most importantly take the time you need to make the decisions right for you- and grieve in the time you need to if removal is your final answer.
Hugs and well wishes..

Re: Found out 2 days ago that I have to have a hysterectomy.
Hi there:
Sorry you have to go thru this! Please check with another doctor about other options to remove the fribroids. there are several option that doesnt involve a hysterectomy. Maybe you can find a good Dr. who can save your uterus without getting you in risk of complications. Ask about a Myomectomy, or Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) agonists, maybe one of these treatments can help you before going to major surgery. Hope everything goes well.

Re: Found out 2 days ago that I have to have a hysterectomy.
mcnancy,
I know how you feel as that was my worry to..that the office will fall apart without me...I have been off for a few months already now (due to not feeling well etc) and so far they have managed just fine. I have let worrying about work go for the most part. Its a busy time at work for me as well so I know exactly how you feel. Just take it easy. I am just envious that you are on the "other side" now...I wish I was there already too...

Re: Found out 2 days ago that I have to have a hysterectomy.
Hope2010 -
I was very lucky that my surgery was scheduled quickly. I really did not have time to worry about it. I was working late nights & weekends to get everything at home and work settled before the big day.
Like you said the office always seems to manage without me. I did get a lot of text messages from the office during the 2 weeks off, but those were easy to handle while lying down. My internist once asked me if there was a monument of me at the office. I asked why - he said because you act like the entire corporate world will fall apart if you take a medical leave. If you are that important to work they will have a monument for you. As funny as it was it made sense...
Try to relax and take as long as you need to recover, I really did come back to the office too soon. Would have been better to take an extra week off.
I will be praying for you on March 31st !

mcnancy,
Oh I have already been off for a few months now and plan on staying away to recover for the maximum of 8 weeks. Then I will take it from there. Thanks for your thoughts and for making me smile. Take care.
