Just out of hospital-total done 5/25/05
Well, I hope I can find this particualar forum when I return to this place...it is soooooo big here!! I never knew I had so many sisters!
Just fresh out of surgery! Had it done 5/26/05, and it's only 5/30/05 today. But I think I'm doing rather well, cept for the poofed up belly and gas thing...ugghhh, I will NOT be eating a lot anymore that's for sure. Celebrated being home yesterday by eathig a bit tooooo much. BIG MISTAKE! Now I look and feel like a pregnant cow!!!
Soooooo, tell me what to do about the belly and the gas...anyone???? Really bothered by both of these symptoms right now.
I used to a little bit before my surgery...by the way had a total, was suffering with fibroids, a tumor and cysts....and walked every day. Kept fairly active really, but not a workout nut at all. I'm 50 years old and am already 50lbs overweight. But now I feel like I look and wiegh about 100 lbs more then I should!!! Feel ycchhhhy! Just plan ycccchhhhy!
So, anyone got any tips??? I don't want to use a belt, I'd rather find ways to strenghthen my stomach muscles with exersize. I also have the next 4 weeks to be able to concentrate on ME. Don't have to go back to work right away...thank God!!!
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

welcome
to the world of Post-Op.
You can't exercise those abdominals yet, so don't even think about it.
It is good that you are feeling gung-** and want to use this time. My doc's advice was to walk for about 10 minutes each hour, spend at least an hour in the morning and one in the afternoon reclining with your feet up.
The nurse at the hospital told me to rock in a rocking chair to help the BM's, but I never had gas so I can't say about that.
Please look at the Checkpoints for some articles about your post op experience. For future reference, if you look at the purple menu bar on every page, you will find the Checkpoints and the Message Board link. Also, if you go up to Hystersister Quick Links and scroll down, you can find Post Op articles that can help you through the first months.
By 4 weeks post op, I was given the all clear for more strenuous exercise, and was swimming, golfing, and walking a lot. I was able to use the cross trainer at the Y, and the circuit machines then too, but eased back into it. I was not able to do the abdominal machines until about 3 months post op-it just hurt too much.
Come back as often as you can. And get all the support you want!

Thanks for your reply PrairieLakeLady,
I think I actually have a bad case of diareah now. Thought it was stopped up, used suppository, now can't stop going. Leaking down my leg...Oh what to do??? Wait it out I guess.
Leg cramps and stomach cramps. Not feeling well. Tryed a heating pad, resting on both sides, am drinking water now...but still feel a mess!
I never should have eaten those potatos and greens yesterday! NEVER!! WHY THE HECK DON'T THEY TELL YOU THIS STUFF WHEN YOU LEAVE THE HOSPITAL??
Sorry, needed to vent. I feel calmer now.

Bam .... That's what this site is for (to give us some first hand expertise to refer to). I wish I'd known about Hyster Sisters BEFORE my surgery. However, I'm really glad I know about it now.
Question for Prairie Lady .... you mentioned abs. Help me understand when it's safe to do crunches again. My abs are still numb (12 weeks out), and I'm scared to do crunches. (I'm doing all other exercises though, including my return to my personal trainer.)

thanks for the support
I just had my op on May 25 and I seem to be doing well. My problem is trying not to do too much. I have been walking since the second day of my surgery. I don't have much pain anymore and I getting a bit antsy. Is sitting up too much a problem?
This is a great site, I'm so glad someone came up with the idea because it has been perfect for me.

Hello ladies...
I wonder if they have ever done a study and found out how many hysterectomies are done on a daily baisis. It seems that many of us here had ours done on or around the same day. Wow, I had no idea it was so common.
Is it the cancer scare thing maybe?? Not sure.
I don't understand what a lavh is wiscrone8. I'm assuming a ro is the right ovary. But you know what they say about the word as-s-u-me
I just had EVERYTHING taken out to be on the safe side. My family history is such that the women tend to have more problems as they age with intact ovaries and such. So instead of risking surgery or cancer in 10-20 years, I wanted to get rid of the risk now while I was still only 50 yrs. old.
I had a small tumor in my cervix...but the fibroid at the top of my uterus must have been the size of a baseball!! That sucker hurt and put wayyy to much pressure on hips and lower back. Even in this stage of my recovery, which is still painful, I can tell I don't have THAT particular pressure on my back anymore. As for the overy removal, I had the doc take them both out to reduce later in life cancer risk due to family history.
Well, I am so glad to meet you all. Please, stay in touch so we can compare recovery notes.
I am not doing as well as you superlup. I had the worst case of gas, diarhea, and swelly belly pain yesterday then I did the day of surgery!! I couldn't walk, stand, sit or lay comfortably at all. I spent 3 hours of my morning curled up on the bathroom floor with 3 blankets and 4 pillows. I was on the toilet every 5 minutes, litterally! My hubby called it my 'castle' for the day!! He was so attentive though. Glad he's able to go thru this with me.
I think the only thing you can do to much of is bendig and stretchig. Those stomach muscles need time to heal and can't if you're using them. Just sitting is not so bad, but walking is supposed to be good for you. But don't push a vacumn or rake a yard. Don't push, bend a lot or pull things, even what you might think are light weight things, around. Not good. You can harm yourself much more then help.
BE BORED. BE ANSY. It's better then pulling a muscle and/or injuring yourself further cause you couldn't stay still enough to heal correctly.
Take care all...I need to go out for a short walk in the nice fresh air before it gets tooo hot.

Just out of hospital-total done 5/25/05
Hi LJMusiknlakers, we are 2 days apart of our surgeries. I had a total (abdominal) on 3/02/05. I'm with you...too sore to use the ab muscles yet. I am still very tender and also have numbness. I am going to Curves, but mainly walk and only use machines that *don't* target the abs right now. I would also like to know when it is "safe" to begin exercising those muscles.
Bam, I am 50 yrs. old also...I had alot of trouble with gas pains for about 3 wks. I sympathize with you on that one! That was worse on me than the surgery itself! Walking keeps things moving and drink lots of water. Don't try to do too much too soon, though. Take it easy for a couple of wks and gradually add a little more walking daily. Good luck and have a speedy recovery!

Just out of hospital-total done 5/25/05
I think I realized today that safety has to come first. I have too much to do to risk being back in the hospital. I will take it easy for a couple of weeks even if I feel like I can do more.
I have been bending some and now I'm scared. Does anyone know what signs I would show if I hurt something?
