Wonderful world of hot flashs and Lupron question

I've timed my hot flashes to one every 30 to 40 minutes. Dependent upon how tired I am, I may sleep almost all night with only 2 wake ups. If I'm not beat, I will wake up about 4 times a night.

My surgery is scheduled for 11/19/04 (something is up with that date - the nineteenth - Something always happens significant on that day, go figure) and I'm to have my 3rd and final shot of Lupron on the 6th. (MAJOR SIGH)

Why do I have to go thru the H-E-double hockeysticks of that shot so close to the surgery date? I mean the adjustment to the shot always makes me rake my poor hubby and everyone else around in 20 feet of me over the coals. Not to mention it brings on savage headaches, and me and my GYN have determined that it hasn't really shrunk my 'broids any. I'm riddled with golf ball to small melon sized fibroids, so no amount of hormone therapy (even keeping my cervix is out because of fibroid regrowth odds) - I guess my question is - Why bother with that final shot?

Wonderful world of hot flashs and Lupron question

That sounds like a reasonable question to me.

Who is suggesting you have the shot, if not your gyn? Is it the surgeon?
Is it possible that the shot was scheduled way before your hyst and no one has thought to double check?

I suggest it is worth talking to all the doctors concerned and seeing what the reasoning is. There may be something that simply hasn't been explained clearly to you.

I'd call.

Wonderful world of hot flashs and Lupron question

I am not having my last shot only because they moved by surgery date up. My date is Nov 10, he told me if I did not have the surgery by the 13th, I would have to take last shot. He said the shot was only to keep me from bleeding. I lost almost 6 pints of blood which could have caused congested heart failure.

Double to check to see if you can miss the shot. I know they cannot be over 30 days a part from shot to shot, you risk losing more blood, postponing surgery until blood count is back up. By again check with your physician. My OB/GYN is doing the surgery.

Wonderful world of hot flashs and Lupron question

Hi Angela,

I had (3) monthly lupron shots to shrink my fibroids enough for my LSH. One of my fibroids shrunk significantly while the other one only shrunk minimally. My Dr. felt "any" shrinkage would help him with my surgery.

I also agree about blood loss. Lupron helps to prevent an aunt flow and in turn that helps to build up a blood count, which is important before surgery.

Best wishes,

Mary

I agree that the last shot is to prevent bleeding before surgery. I'm scheduled for a TAH/BSO (removing cervix too) on Nov. 20 and had my last shot last night. I currently have a 7.5 mg. Lupron shot every 3 weeks.

Good luck with your surgery.
