Re: 3 weeks yesterday since op and in pain
Hi there, I don't think you're being wimpy at all!!! I wasn't able to do very much at all for the first 3-4 weeks or so. I would read about women heading back to work, or going for walks...I was just like you. I did manage to walk at a snails pace for about 10 minutes here and there and maybe if it was a good day, cook a light dinner or light housework, but seriously...everything was hard and I had NO energy at all until about week 5.
We all heal differently! Try not to get frustrated and just continue to rest and recover. You'll get there when your ready!!! :-)
HUGS to you!

Re: 3 weeks yesterday since op and in pain
Hi there,
I know exactly how you feel because I felt the same. I started going for a walk down my street each day when I was about 4-5 weeks but it was very slow and I didn't do it everyday because I was in too much discomfort.
I cried to my husband on many occasions after reading about others who were going out and feeling great. We are all different and even now I'm 5 months I'm still not fully recovered. If you read further back on this site there are some ladies who say it takes about a year before you are back at full strength and I guess that I'm one of those.
I went back to work at 12 weeks and although I didn't feel like it at the time it actually made me feel better.
I didn't cook or do any housework until about week 8.
Take care we are all different and your body will tell you when your ready to be more active.

nah you are not wimpy. Don't feel bad I am going thru the same thing and I am 4 weeks since surgery. My head wants me to do things but my body has different plans. I developed a blood clot from surgery that is making recovery worse. I have those days where I feel useless, actually yesterday was one of those and I cried on and off all day. I felt like such a baby...lol...I'm over that now...lol.the frustration will come and go....hang tight..it will get better

Re: 3 weeks yesterday since op and in pain
Have not read the other replies, but here is my response to the original post...
If it makes you feel any better, at the 3 week mark I had just started to taper off my narcotic pain meds from every 4 hours around the clock to every 6 hours around the clock, still taking 800mg of Advil in between doses. I was still down more than I was up.
It was well into my 3rd month post op before I was able to do any walking of any considerable distance or pace.
Not to discourage anyone, but it was a full 18 months before I was able to get back to a normal workout and walking routine (working out 3 a couple times a week and walking a couples miles a day every other day).
Recover takes a long time sometimes, and remember, the first 6 weeks it is important to get lots of rest. It is a 2 steps forward, 2 step back process many times. You feel great one day, and get up and move around, then the next day you are back in the recliner not doing anything. As you recover, and as times passes, you will find more days that are good, and more days in between the bad ones. Eventually you will have mostly good days.
Give yourselves time to heal. Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint!
hang in there and take care of yourselves.

Re: 3 weeks yesterday since op and in pain
I'm at 4 weeks now, and the past few days I am starting to feel a lot more energy and alertness, and my energy doesn't drain out as fast. But I still can't do much. During the course of the day, I can do some things around the house - a load of dishes, a load or two of laundry, clean the bathroom once a week, and pop something into the oven. For Easter, my husband did most of the work. I sat at the table and did some advance prep cutting up vegetables and such.
But - walking is hard for me. I've managed a couple of trips to the store for small personal shopping. I park as close as I can get to the front door of the store, grab a small shopping cart to lean on, hobble into the store and sit at the Starbucks area for a while. Then I slowly make my way to get the one or two items I want, and by the time I am through the check stand I'm about ready to collapse. I make to Starbucks again, and rest up for a while before going out to the car.
I have a public health nurse through my insurance company who has been calling me to check on my every so often. She said don't try to do any exercise the first 6 weeks, then start some gentle walking after that. I don't listen to that advice completely, but it makes me feel less lazy knowing that I shouldn't be doing much yet.
I think all of us are hoping to find that balance between being wimpy and overdoing it. I feel that I should be doing a lot more - but that is probably because I am not used to being this "lazy." Get a day or two of really good rest, and next time try one lap around the garden. Then later in the day another lap, instead of all at once. That's what I am trying to do in the house. Too much snow to walk outside yet. But I try to do a few short walks in the house throughout the day.
