post-op no-no's
Just logged onto this fab site last night on my 12th day post-op from TAH. I received some written instructions from the hospital, but not detailed enough. Your list included no bending. Can you tell me what is bad about bending over? I have been doing that, but only from the hips or squat and slight bend combined. Not much different that the angle of sitting up or on the toilet! Anyway, just looking for some insight on that! Thanks!

The bending ristriction has to do with internal stiches and lack of muscle control
We had one sister here who decided to have a walk in her garden saw a weed squated to give it a tug and ...
I try not to bend (it is difficult when you drop something I know) Some of the ladies have bought grabbers from Walmart (I use a pair of long handled washing tongs)
I think it might be more to the fact of the wieght limit you are allowed to pick up also as you can't tighten you abs properly when you lift.
I do know that if I do forget and bend to pick something up my light spotting increases and gets a little brighter in colour. So I must be pulling at the stiches in my vaginal cuff.
Someone else will probable come up with a much better reason though

post-op no-no's
I started bending over within a few days of coming home from the hospital - those grabber things can't pick up a water bowl for the dog! I had no problems with bending over - no pain or complications - but I was careful to move slowly and not get back up too fast (so as not to get dizzy). My doctor didn't give me any real restrictions post-op... she said you are a smart, well-educated woman with common sense, so use it! So, I did. When the bending once or twice a day to freshen water bowls didn't bother me, I kept doing it. But then again - I'm used to doing it a lot ( lots of animals, lots of water bowls) and despite being very out of shape, can bend over and touch my toes. So to me, bending over was one of the least-hard things to do post-op.
Everyone is different...

Thanks!
I appreciate the info! I was used to bending over prior to surgery, too. I'm an elementary teacher. Didn't bother me at all, really, not like sneezing, coughing, or going to the bathroom. No pain! I will be
good and limit what I bend over for now!(' ') Thanks again!

Uh-oh, I've been bending too!
Wish I'd found this site in the first two weeks post op. I've been bending over (to pick things up) since about 1 week out without pain, so I thought it was fine. Now I'm worried about internal tears, etc. I worry about every little thing it seems.

Hey sisters!
I didn't know that bending was restricted!! Heck, I was bending over in the hospital, picking up things since the nurses were no where to be found!

Sounds like you're doing pretty well with your body mechanics. Basically you don't want to stretch and strain your incision or the internal areas is all. Plus it's also about the lifting restrictions. Lifting the upper half of your body back up from a bend qualifies as lifting, too :-d
It depends on the individual. I am a very large woman with a pendulous abdomen and had a very long incision. My surgeon was very clear about not bending over AT ALL beyond what it took to use the toilet and wash myself. But I think my case was rather more complicated in that way than most people's are.

In the first week, or so, any slight strain on internal sutures can cause even the tiniest droplets of blood to form. Wherever that blood falls in your abdominal cavity, can be a potential site for adhesion formation. And, if you carry any weight in your abdomen like I did, the stress of bending can put even more undue pressure on those sutures.
Don't want anybody to be afraid of moving, but the more you know, the more meticulous you can be.....especially the first couple of weeks......in preventing potential problems down the road. So....what's the worst thing that's gonna happen if you don't bend for a little while?
Take care...

I like the idea of the *grabber* for helping to pick up things. I took a metal clothes hanger and bent it to extend it, then I used the hook to pick up things. One time I used a stick with masking tape on the end to help pick up papers I had dropped. After this type of surgery and recovery time, I'm trying not to take any chances of possibly injuring myself. Take care ladies! God bless.
