stairs???

Still not sure when surgery will be but have been thinking about what will happen after surgery, my concern/question is.. my computer sits downstairs in our home and I worry about being able to get to it. (I was'nt sure where to post this question since I don't have a date yet I could'nt post it on post op)

I wonder if anyone will be able to give me some insight on if we should move it upstairs (how I wish I would've gotten a laptop LOL!!) or if it could be manageable....I have to go down 12 steps... any help would be extremely appreciative

I should mention that I will be having a TAH

Re: stairs???

That was one of my huge concerns as well.

I had my TAH this past Monday, May 3rd.

I take care of all of the paperwork for my husband's business, plus all aspects of it for my own business. We live in a three story home with our bedroom and bath upstairs, the usual on the first floor plus a half bath and my husband built a beautiful office for me in our basement.

Prior to surgery we set up a table in our great room and brought the computer, printer, checkbook and all essentials related to what I might need, up from the basement.

I have to say, stairs have not been an issue AT ALL for me. I read before surgery to take them one at a time, but I have not felt the need to do so, but I do take my time!!!

Having the computer on the main floor has truly helped. If you are able to make those arrangements prior to surgery, I would suggest doing so. I warn you though, at least for me, I don't feel like sitting at the computer for very long.

Good luck to you!!

Re: stairs???

Did you ask your Dr about this, I had my TAH done march 25th and I was not aloud to climb stairs. I didnt feel like sleeping in my bed for a few days cause it pulled on the stitches when I laid down. The couch was perfect cause your butt sinks down better then a bed. Could you stay down stairs for a while. you will be suprised how you cant go up stairs and that your muscles arnt ready to lift you yet.

Re: stairs???

I was told no stairs but that is more because of my bladder repair. I would ask the doc. If you have to you could maybe move it upstairs to a temp location? I imagine even if you are able to climb stairs per the doc, you might want to avoid them as much as you can. I am scheduled Tuesday and the only thing I've ever had done there semi-surgical was an episiotomy repair and a cervical repair after childbirth and it hurt like a mofo to even try to get into the minivan.

Re: stairs???

i had a LAVH and wasn't told to avoid stairs however I did avoid them for 1 week. I think if I had HAD to, i could have managed them once or twice a day. However I was very happy not to have to. We set up a computer and tv in the bedroom for me.

Definitely check with your dr about it. I think that the less strain you put on those abs at first the better!

(I think this was the right place to put your question!)

Re: stairs???

Thanks girls I will definitely check with my Dr first and I think when the time comes (hopefully soon) we will move the computer upstairs.

Re: stairs???

Hi Campergurl,
I had a TAH and my docs never mentioned stairs. I have a backsplit and need to use stairs to go anywhere. While I was in the castle I asked the nurse to send in the physiotherapist and she watched me climb the stairs there. She told me to hold the railing and go up two feet per stair and to have someone with me. i tried not to use the stairs too often in the first week but really didn't have any problems.
My family room and living room are both on levels with no bathroom so I had to go up to my bedroom. I set up my bedroom to have most things I would need. Ask your doc. And if possible arrange your house to avoid the stairs as much as possible. By week 3 I was going up and down stairs easily.

Re: stairs???

I have a 2 story. TAH/BOS scheduled May 17th. My doc has said as long as there is no complications i should be able to come home and go upstairs to my room and downstairs in the mornings. once a day for a few days and then as tolerated. I thought stairs we're an auto no no too. but it seems its different for everyone. So if you can do the stairs I guess that means you are do well overall. So I hope for you that stairs are not a problem. Good Luck! See you on the post ops soon.

Re: stairs???

Depending on work to be done on the pc- maybe you could get an iPod touch? I am new here & haven't figured out acronyms, but I had daVinci- and it was not comfortable to sit @ pc - but I could check email while in bed or on couch w/ iPod!
My Dr. Said no more than 3 sets stairs per day. I've got a 3 story with garage below (4 story). I'm 3 weeks post-op- have done 8-9 flights per day the last 3 days, & have been very achy. Good luck figuring it out!
