Post op bleeding

I had an abdominal hysterectomy on the 13th and had minor vaginal bleeding, as expected, immediately after the surgery. At 9days post op I started to spot, and the flow is now as heavy as a light period. I have no fever and the pain is decreasing daily. I went to Emergency at out local hospital two nights ago and and was told that my symptoms are within normal parameters, whatever that means. So my question is this: is this bleeding normal and has anyone else experienced this? What causes this?

Re: Post op bleeding

Have you called your doctor? We could be guessing for a long time as to the cause. It could be normal things like stitches dissolving, blood draining from the abdominal cavity or it could be something that needs to be addressed. Please keep us posted.

This is not quite accurate. I kept my ovaries and really only bled the day after surgery. After that, I had pink spotting on the toilet paper for less than a week and then no more bleeding for the remainder of my recovery.

I think that you might be thinking of mini periods and those only happen to a small percentage of ladies who keep both their ovaries and their cervix.

I hope this helps.

Re: Post op bleeding

I have had bleeding too. I went to the emergency room on Christmas eve. Guess my bleeding is normal. They did bloodwork to determine if I was bleeding internally and I am not. I am trying to take it easy and that isn't always easy with a houseful of teenagers! I find that the bleeding improves if I behave myself and let the kids do the work!
