More migraines after hyster? I thought I'd have fewer?

My mil said that once she went through menopause her migraines went away.

I have suffered from them for many years, a few a month normally. Post op I had one each day for the first week, now, day 19 I have had one a day(at night) the past two nights now-and they are REALLY bad ones.

I'm not sure if I should call my gyne who did my surgery or my neurologist who treats my migraines?

Any idea when these will lessen or go away? I can NOT take these-worst side effect I'm having.

Thanks for any advice.

Kathy
I am sorry you are still having migraines. I had them for 8 years only with my period. Did you get them when you did not have your period? I see you had both ovaries removed like me.
My migraines stopped after my hyst. Did you know there are a number of new migraine medications (RX) out now. I would call your gyn and see what they think. I do know that if you treat a migraine for more than 4 days straight you will start getting a rebound migraine. Hang in there I know how bad it can get.

Thanks Pam. Yes, I actually work for a neurologist and there are lots of migraine medications out and I even take something daily to help reduce them and I was managable until now. Yeah, I've always had them-even the past 5 or whatever years with no period, but not THIS bad.
My Gyne didn't seem to care when I mentioned it at my first post op at week #2.

I would talk to the neurologist, especially if your gynecologist didn't seem to care when you mentioned it at 2 weeks post op.

Even though your ovaries were removed, you could still have some residual hormones in your system contributing to the migraines. Also, not all hormonal migraines are caused for the same reasons. Some are from the change in estrogen, some the progesterone as it can affect your estrogen level. Your neurologist would be the best one to advise you. My own neurologist would never let me use any type of progesterone treatment for my endometriosis because he said it could increase my migraines.

Are you keeping a headache journal? Have any other meds changed? Any chance one of your meds, or your prophylactic migraine med, changed to generic or a different manufacturer?

in there but get in touch with the neurologist and see what options there are for you.

Re: More migraines after hyster? I thought I'd have fewer?

I'm experiencing this as well. I have always had migraines, depending on whether or not I ate certain foods as well as due to my hormone swings. Imitrex or other triptans are the only drugs that work - sometimes I can get away with Advil, but nothing else works. Now I'm at 6 months post hysterectomy and I'm having migraines whenever my estrogen dips. Which really frustrates me because I'm on a high amount of estrogen. I tend to get them when I'm enduring more stress, which is usual around Christmas and also as a result of some other stressors. I went to my doctor today because I am low on Imitrex and wanted to find out if there is any way I could get more than 9 a month and he said it's very difficult for even neurologists to get insurance companies to ok that. So he's trying me out on beta blockers just to see if it helps prevent them from happening.

Right now, I know that more estrogen helps me - if I have a migraine and I take some, it helps within a short amount of time, even shorter than Imitrex does. But I'm already on a high amount so it doesn't seem like a good way to deal with it. Not sure what to do so I'm hoping to learn what other people end up doing about this. I don't like hot flashes but can handle them - migraines though are another issue entirely.

Best of luck!

Re: More migraines after hyster? I thought I'd have fewer?

What we do for our patients is give them the 90 day plus three refills to get it filled through mail away RX to get more on hand, and then we give them a bunch of samples

being sweet to the office girls is your key to more samples most of the time.
