Should I try Mirena before hysterectomy for long battle with pelvic pain?

So grateful to have found this forum! I've been reading about others experiences with the Mirena IUD and am on the fence about trying it vs just going for the surgical option.

History - two laparoscopies in early 2000's for endo, and on the second they found a large ovarian cyst that had to be removed surgically along with the ovary. Last couple of years, all the usual painful symptoms returning. I also have a very retroverted uterus and suspect adhesions between it and my bowel are causing major pain during sex and bathroom breaks.

Thinking a hormonal solution may not help as I was on the pill when the first round of endo developed - ? And I don't seem to have a problem with too much estrogen...I have too much testosterone and have been on an androgen-blocker for the past 4 years to reduce acne and facial hair. Have had two major abdominal surgeries so understand the recovery from this and was hoping one last surgery would resolve issues (fingers crossed). My gyno says I need to think about trying mirena or just going for the surgery.

Any suggestions?

Well honestly, I would just go for the surgery if its an option for you. I tried the mirena and apparently, I'm in the 10% who could feel it. It hurt! I was in constant pain and within the hour of having it removed the pain started edging off. But I have also heard of so many not having any problems. Good luck

Just my experience the mirena was one of the very worst treatments I tried. .but the next person might tell you it worked wonders..I hated it and it ended up falling out.

Re: Should I try Mirena before hysto for long battle with pelvic pain?

I thought of Mirena , but with the size of clots I was passing was told it might not stay in. I had adenomyosis( endo of the inside of uterus) I had a uterus that was in full time contraction mode, like labor. Plus I didn't seem to tolerate any hormonal means very well.

Re: Should I try Mirena before hysto for long battle with pelvic pain?

I had the mirena for 10 years. My horrible cramps disappeared and I no longer needed pain meds for those days. I never had a period in all that time except for the first year. I didn't get cysts until, after I took it out. Then ended up with a large one...

Re: Should I try Mirena before hysto for long battle with pelvic pain?

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. After my doctor's apt, I talked to my mom who had a hysterectomy at 38. I did not know until I asked her yesterday why she had hers and her history with pelvic issues, and she said she had precancerous lesions. Between what I've researched and hearing this about my mom's history, I'm heavily leaning towards the surgery!
