sciatica developed after surgery

I developed sciatica after my robotic hysterectomy. I have had numbness in my right leg that comes and goes and moves around since my surgery 8 weeks ago. My dr. said it is from being in the stirrups for so long...4 hours. It has been very painful and scarey. I am only 35 and have never had this before. I go to a neurologist tomorrow. It looks like I will start physical therapy soon.

Has anyone had anything like this happen?
Please help!

sciatica developed after surgery

Hi shelant,

I have had sciatica but it was before my hysterectomy. I agree that it is very, very painful and quite scary. My sciatica was due to a herniated disk pressing on my sciatic nerve and ran down my right leg. The pain and numbness was unbearable for me at times. I was able to get through it with too many doctors appointments to count, physical therapy, MRI, xrays, epidural steriod injections, consults with neurosurgeon and different meds.

I hope your neurologist appointment goes well. Please let us know how it goes.

Thank you. My MRI of my spine came out fine. It appears to be compression from the surgery. I hope it gets better soon. Thanks for your reply.

sciatica developed after surgery

I had sciatica years ago and it is SO painful. It is the one and only time I enlisted the help of a chiropractor and it healed me. I went for a while for treatments, but ultimatley it went completely away.

Good luck,

I also had robotic surgery and debilitating back and leg pain post op which was thought to be sciatica from a herniated disc...except my MRI was normal...as it turns out it was a sacroilliac injury and after 16 weeks of PT and pushing myself like crazy at the gym I can honestly say I am finally 90% pain-free..essentially it is important to build strength in all of the supporting muscles...stabilizes the joint. si joint injury is VERY common and often under or misdiagnosed...just a thought.

DaVinci Robot...the actual internal work is done by robotic instruments through laproscopic ports...long surgery but work is very intricate and fine, with fewer complications, less bleeding and often shorter recovery...if your back can stand the 4 hour OR time!!

I suffered w/sciatica for years. When it first started, I ended up in the ER one night. None of the painkillers or muscle relaxers they gave me did anything to help. It was only when I started chiropractic visits that I was able to get any relief. I highly recommend you look into that.

Oddly, I have had lower back pain off and on ever since that initial attack. But, since my hysterectomy on March 11, that pain seems to be completely gone.

Best of luck to you!
