Blood Transfusion???

Hi,

1 1/2 weeks pre-op, I was at 7.3 and since I had been bleeding continously iron pills couldn't do their job. I had to get a transfusion (2 units) which brought level up to 10, continue with iron pills and control bleeding with birth control pills (up to 4 a day). The morning of surgery, hemoglobin was at 11, which was great. It was down to 8.4 post-op which did not concern anyone (I've been at the level frequently), at 2 weeks post-op, when constipation was under control, I continued on iron pills for a month and now everything is back to normal!

Prior to surgery, my hemoglobin was 14. Fortunately I'm not one of those who experienced heavy periods. However, due to excessive blood loss during surgery I needed two units of blood after surgery. I couldn't believe how much they helped. I felt much stronger after the transfusions.

I wouldn't wish for one, but if you need it don't hesitate to have it!

I would like to thank everyone for the encouraging words. I am taking two iron pills (Chromagen) per day as well as Raw Liver Extract to build red blood cells as well as Arnica (homeopathic) to control bleeding during surgery. I am also taking birth control pills 4 per day to hold off my cycle which was due on 12/27. My doctor knows that if my cycle started this week my blood count would be extremely low by Monday.

I just had my surgery on Tuesday, 12/28 and did require a transfusion. My hemoglobin was 6.5 when I was admitted and I got one unit of blood before the surgery, one during and one after for a total of three. My hemoglobin is now at 9.5 which is still on the low side - but much better for me.
