Clotting Disorder?

Does anyone else have one? I was reading all the information the hospital gave me about the surgery and it said to avoid blood thinners, but I am supposed to take them for my blood clotting disorder. I put a call into the doctor just to be sure and am still waiting to hear back....not sure what I should do. Does anyone else have to take thinners? Did you stop taking them before your surgery?

Re: Clotting Disorder?

I take 6mg of Coumadin daily because I was in the hospital for a week in May, 2009 with clots in my legs and lungs. In Dec. I had a breast surgery and the Drs. had me quit the Coumadin a week before and give myself Lovenox shots 5 days before the surgery. But my OB-GYN (my surgeon also) just said to quit the Coumadin 1 week before my TAH/BSO and doesn't want me to do the shots. It takes Coumadin 2-3 days to get out your system completely. He said he will call in a specialist in the hospital to get me back on the Coumadin. That will probably be Lovenox shots in the hospital while the Coumadin builds back up. I will probably be on Coumadin the rest of my life.

Re: Clotting Disorder?

I had a previous DVT and Factor V Leiden so I take aspirin daily currently. I had to get clearance from my Hematologist prior to surgery.

My surgeon had me stop the aspirin 1 week before surgery. On the day of surgery they gave me a Heprin shot 2 hrs prior to surgery and then they started me on lovenox shots later that evening. I had to take the shots for 2 weeks after surgery to prevent any clots. It seemed to work, I am 7 weeks post op and all is good.
My mom was on Coumadin last year due to a a clot and she had to stop 1 week prior to a surgery and then they put her on the Lovenox shots until her blood thinned and then Coumadin for 6 months after the surgery.
I was very concerned with throwing a clot. They used the boots on my legs while I was laid up in bed in the hospital. I wanted to take the boots home since they felt so good.
I had TAH/BSO and my only issue has to do with not being able to do HRT.

Re: Clotting Disorder?

Hi,
I have 2 clotting disorders and I take Plavix 75 mg and baby aspirin daily. I'm actually having my hysterectomy tomorrow morning and there was some confusion re; this at my pre-op. For prior surgeries, I had always stopped one week prior without issue. Apparently, because they are working with bigger blood vessels during a hyst. and it's a longer surgery this time, the dr. said I needed to stop 10 days prior to surgery.

Good luck!

Re: Clotting Disorder?

How does it go without HRT? Are there any issuses to be aware of? I have V Leiden but no clot so far. Here's hoping hyster doesn't change that!

Re: Clotting Disorder?

I too have a clotting disorder. My surgery was on Jan 21st, my hemotologist put me on shots of Lovenox (one shot in the am and one shot in the pm) for a month starting the day after surgery. Not fond of giving myself shots, but no clots is a great thing!

Re: Clotting Disorder?

Still waiting for a call back...so annoying that it takes so long for a simple answer. I guess if they were really worried they would have called back right away so I am going to continue on my meds until I hear otherwise. Thanks for your input ladies.
