So scared.....any advice?

Hi, HeartsofThree -
I wanted to address your passing out with medical procedures. I used to get dizzy or light headed whenever my blood was drawn and I have no qualms about it - no issues with needles or pain or blood or anything. It used to mystify me why I would get faint because I usually felt pretty calm about it all. Then one astute nurse announced to me while she was trying to get a sample from me, "I don't hear breathing. I want to hear breathing!" And that's when I realized that I would hold my breath to make sure that I kept perfectly still for them. So now I focus on my breathing and I haven't had a problem since.

I know that you have fears and anxieties with the procedures (which is only natural!) and I thought the breathing trick might help you too. Just focus on your breathing and hopefully that will help take your mind off of whatever is being done (starting an IV, drawing blood, etc.). Plus, you'll make sure that you are still getting oxygen and maybe won't pass out!

I know this is an extremely anxiety producing situation! I am over the top about it myself, in spite of my usual calm about other medical stuff. This site has offered wonderful support for all of the fears we are experiencing. It's good to know that we aren't alone!

Glad its over

Hi

Know how you feel, i am 3 weeks over my TAH, forget about the return to work in 2 weeks. You will need all the time you can get. Can empathise about the lack of nursing skills with the husband, i was sure mine would be the same. Can honestly say he has astonished me. I have a whole new respect for him. You will need all the help you can get, so any offers you get take it. It is a big deal but you will come out the other side..Chin up and plan something wonderful for yourself when it is all over.

So scared.....any advice?

Hi Hearts of 3,

I also pass out when I have get my blood taken or an IV started. Also if one of my children is getting something done. What they do for me is when are taking blood or starting an IV they have two people with me. One to do the blood or IV and the other on the other side of me talking to me. It takes my mind off of what is being done. I have not fainted since this has been done. I hope this helps.
