High white blood cell count
I had a TVH on 8/14, which went relatively well. Yesterday I ran a fever of 102.4 with pretty bad pain and called the doctor. He told me to come in today to see him. I went in and the fever was gone, but the pain is still just as bad. I have a terrible pain on the right side of my abdomen that is tender to touch. He looked at my V cuff and said that it looks good and there is no sign of infection, but sent me for blood work just in case. He said that the pain could be from overdoing it. I can barely move. Well, my white blood count is high, so he has prescribed me Flagyl. If there is no sign of infection at the V cuff, what could it be? Is this pain really normal? I didn't feel like I did anything too strenuous I go back to the doctor on Friday.

Re: High white blood cell count
Did your doctor consider appendicitis? While it could be an infection or abscess at the cuff due to your surgery, and it's tempting to assume the problem is due to your surgery since it's so recent, it is possible that it's not related or only indirectly related to the surgery. For example, I had horrible lower left abdominal pains and cycling fevers 3-4 weeks post op and my DR assumed it was an infection due to the surgery - turned out to be diverticulitis. Since you mention that your pain is on the right, the appendix immediately springs to mind.
If the fever returns and/or the pain does not improve rapidly on Flagyl, I would get seen again, and before Friday. I hope you're much better by then, though.

-Linda
