Save The Ovaries Or Not?

I AM HAVING A TAH, AND BSO (BILATERAL TUBES AND OVARIES)IN MAY. I NEED THIS DONE FOR EXCESSIVE BLEEDING AND HAVE TRIED OTHER OPTIONS AND NONE HAVE HELPED. MY QUESTION IS:

DO I SAVE MY TUBES AND OVARIES OR REMOVE THEM ALSO AT THIS TIME AND GO ON ESTROGEN THERAPY? THERE IS A FAMILY HISTORY OF UTERINE CANCER.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. WHAT TO READ TO HELP ME DECIDE? WHO ELSE TO TALK TO?

Hi

You're just a few months older than I am, and at our age, we still may have years to go before menopause. So, if there is no history of ovarian cancer and no problems with the ovaries, usually the thought is to leave the ovaries so that HRT won't be necessary.

However, this is a decision that you should probably make with your doctor. Each woman's situation is different, and only your doctor would be able to advise you as to what would be right for you.

You might also try doing a search and see what information you can find here at this site.

Best wishes and s,

Lisa

Save The Ovaries Or Not?

I'm sort of in the same situation. I'm in my mid-40's.

As far as I can tell the ultrasound showed ovaries that were so shrunken it's doubtful if they're doing much anyway. I was on estrogen supplemental therapy and I'd like to continue after the surgery. I'm off now because of the other problems it caused.

I have to talk to my doctor about my options. If she advises against estrogen supplement post-op because I have a problem with blood clots, I want to keep my ovaries. If she says she'll take my ovaries and let me have estrogen, then that's the way I'll go. All I know for sure is I don't want to be without any estrogen at this age - if I can help it.

However my situation is unique. I have a family history of heart disease, and a personal history of blood clots and hormonal infertility treatments. All the risks need to be weighed. My DR and I have a lot to talk about during the pre-op.
