music in the operating room

does anyone have any information on being allowed to wear a headset and listening to relaxation tapes during surgery? I just purchased a new copy of Bernie Siegels "getting ready" tape, and found it invaluable for my sinus surgery about 7 years ago. Because they were operating on my face they said they would put it back on after the surgery, and keep turning the tape over for me in recovery - they did do that, and I did wonderfully - they surgery took 1/2 hour less than anticipated, I had very little bleeding, and very little pain (I have no tolerance for pain, and am fearful of being in excrutiating pain). No one could believe it, ---me either, really, I used these tapes to sleep, relax, etc, and used them in my practive with lots of patients (for relaxation) not necessarily surgery --so...anyone know the answer, or should I call the operating room at the hospital?

Lynda,
I did just what you are asking if you CAN do! It was suggested to me just days before my surgery to prepare myself for surgery by a friend of mine who is a nurse. I also found information in Northrup's "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" on how to prepare for surgery. When I went in for my pre-admission testing at the hospital and spoke with the screening nurse I told her that I wold like to bring a cassette tape with a headset into the operating room and have it played during surgery and recovery. I first got quite a chill from this nurse but she went down and spoke with the anesthesiologist and I got the go ahead. I also asked my doctor the morning of the surgery to say certain healing statements that I had printed on 4x6 cards ( I made several copies and handed them out to the anesthesiologist while he introduced himself to me as well as his assistant). My doctor was very receptive about this and frankly, she told me several times after the surgery that she gave me those healing statements several times during the surgery especially since my fibroid turned out to be an unexpected cancer!!!!!

Go for it! And don't take no for an answer!
