Upcoming hysterectomy 8/21: Anyone lose ovaries at 35?
Hey y'all I have another question. I'm 35 and I have an upcoming surgery on 8/21. I will lose both ovaries with my hysterectomy. I am not a candidate for hrt because I have adenocarcinoma in situ. I'm wondering if any of you lost your ovaries at 35 like me and how you are dealing without hormones. I'm afraid it will make me crazy or lose my sex drive etc. and I'm so young. Any feedback would be great!
Thanks in advance!

Re: Anyone lose ovaries at 35?
Hi, I'm a little older than you (42) but hadn't been menopausal at all before I got my endo adenocarcinoma diagnosis. From my experience, my moods have been fine And I'm looking forward to being released for sex 😄
My only hormonal issues have been some serious night sweats so far. We will see!
So sorry you got the cancer diagnosis. You've got this! Xx

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 8/21: Anyone lose ovaries at 35?
Hi
I'm a little older than you as well (44) but I also had to lose my ovaries due to an endometrial cancer diagnosis in June of this year.
So far, I am three weeks post op and don't feel any different whatsoever. I have the odd night sweat but I had those before the op so that isn't new (that was the only menopause symptom I had noticed and had only been happening a couple of months before the op).
I keep waiting for the surgical menopause to hit me like a truck but so far it hasn't. Hopefully it wont come and you will be the same. I haven't been cleared for sex yet but the urge hasn't gone away, thank goodness. I was really worried about that too.
So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Keep strong :-) xx

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 8/21: Anyone lose ovaries at 35?
Most often, cervical cancer ladies are able to do HRT, even those with adenocarcinomas. In fact, cervical cancer ladies very often retain their ovaries as well since cervical cancer doesn't appear to have a hormonal connection (like urine), and the ovaries aren't usually a common site for recurrence (although it does happen). I had early invasive adenocarcinoma (stage IAI), and my very cautious gyn/onc prescribed HRT prior to my leaving the hospital following my radical hysterectomy. I elected not to take HRT on the recommendation of my dermatologist due to studies indicating a possible hormonal link to melanoma which I'd also had. This previous cancer history is also one of the primary reasons we removed my ovaries. So, this might be something you want to research a bit more and discuss with your doc and/or get a second opinion, if HRT is something you would like to do.
Speaking of research, you're welcome to check out our Cancer Concerns forum as well, if you'd like. There's lots of great information as well as experienced ladies who'll help however they can.
My no HRT experience was no walk in the park but was do-able. I was in my late thirties at the time. I took vitamin E for mild hot flashes, and my over-emotional state settled back on its own. For now, I have very dry skin and my hair has thinned quite a bit. There's also some mild cognitive issues (like a word being on the tip of your tongue), but nothing severe -- more so annoying. Of course, we won't know long-term effects until further down the road.
Sending hugs and prayers your way. You CAN do this!

Thanks for your advice! I go to preop on Friday. I hope I can speak with my Dr. then as well. I'd rather leave an ovary if possible but they didn't sound like I should go that route. It's all so very scary and upsetting.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 8/21: Anyone lose ovaries at 35?
Sounds like a good plan. Of course, the ovary decision depends on your medical/family history as well. I just wanted to be sure you knew that having been on this site almost a decade, the vast majority of cervical cancer ladies posting here do keep their ovaries (again, depending on individual circumstances). As further FYI, if the concern is preventing future ovarian cancer, studies indicate that some of those actually begin in the fallopian tubes, so some ladies keep their ovaries but have the tubes removed.
Here's a good page from cancer.gov listing treatment by staging: http://www.cancer.gov/types/cervical...q#section/_201 Remember, a total hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus and cervix. Ovary removal is an oophorectomy.
If you don't get to speak with your doctor on Friday, please be certain you are all on the same page with the decision. Whatever you decide, you're going to ROCK this, and we'll be here for you!

I am 39 and had mine removed. I'm just over 4 weeks post-op. So far it's not horrible, but I do notice hot flashes. They really suck. As far as sex drive...I didn't have much before really. So not sure I'm a good gauge on that one!

Thanks guys! I talked to my doc today and she said I should be able to keep my ovaries if everything looks ok when she's in there. I feel a little bit of relief because I was really dreading menopause so early.
