Birth Control Pills & Surgery ...

4 years ago I was put on a low dose BC pill to stop my heavy periods. The BC pills stopped my periods totally. My surgery will be on January 22nd. (I can't believe how fast that time is coming up!) I wanted to know if any of you Ladies were on BC pills before your surgery, and if so did your Doctor tell you to stop taking them before surgery? I can't wait to stop taking them. I think I'm going to stop taking them January 1st, and I'll probably have the worse period EVER on the day of my surgery.

Re: Birth Control Pills & Surgery ...

I was on the pill for 5 1/2 yrs before my surgery to control bleeding. My dr had me go off the pills about 10 days before surgery as apparently the pill can increase your chances of blood clots after surgery. We also wanted to get hormone levels before surgery to see where I was in the menopause world- I'm almost 49. Well, I went off the pill and holy sh*t- I got a massive surge of hormones- I couldn't believe it! So apparently my ovaries are functioning just fine and because they looked nice and healthy we were able to leave them.

BTW- my dr fully expected I would get my period and have if for the surgery and I never did! It was really strange!

Re: Birth Control Pills & Surgery ...

You need to check with your doctor about when to stop them. Some of us are told to take them right up to the day before surgery. There are a lot of issues that help a doctor determine when you should stop them so don't make the decision on your own or you could end up having your surgery canceled.

I agree. Ask your doctor. I've read 2 weeks and then asked my dr. And she said 3 days. I think this might be an individual thing.

Re: Birth Control Pills & Surgery ...

I am having my surgery on 11/5. I just talked to the pre-op nurse today and she told me to keep taking the bc until surgery because if I stop them now then my heavy bleeding will start in a day. But I would ask the nurse/doctor just to make sure what you should do in your situation.
