One Month Post-Op - Am I where I need to be in my recovery?
Hi all -
Here I am, one month post-op. I am sitting here totally exhausted, tired, my left and right sides ache horribly. I am feeling alone in my recovery...like okay, one month, time's up...suck it up and get the frick over it already. My DH has been wonderful the entire time but even he seems to be weary of me. Okay, so maybe I am exaggerating a little. I think I am on my period right now...no tell-tale signs though! Woo hoo! One positive thing.
In the past few days, several people have mentioned the one month mark in a tone that can only equate to, why are we even still discussing this? Why aren't you better?
Well, I am A LOT better. I think about where I was just 2 weeks ago and I am amazed. I am back at work full-time as of last Friday, my 4-week mark. I actually only worked 7 hours today so I could get to the grocery store to get some healthy food because I am too heavy post-op and cannot fit most of my clothes still. I did not get chance to go to the store this weekend as I was doing laundry, dusting, mopping, vaccuuming, bathrooms, etc. All of which took at least 3 times as long as it would have pre-op.
When oh when will I be 100%? Heck, I would settle for 90%!
Hubby and I have a reunion weekend planned for the 16th. It is to celebrate 14 years of marriage, valentine's day and a celebration of my recovery. Now he has voiced concerns that I might sleep the whole time. I have to admit...I sleep A LOT these days. I have NEVER been a nap person but I sure am now. Does this stay or pass with time?
Thanks for letting me vent...

One Month Post-Op - Am I where I need to be in my recovery?
Hi, I am only in my 2nd week of recovery, but what I am learning (the hard way, as I learn most things ) is that it's so important to have patience with our bodies. This is especially hard when we live in a culture where we are often expected to "get over" whatever is troubling us in days, or weeks at most. I think we need to resist this, because unless our bodies are functioning healthily, we can't be workers, or wives, or friends, or anything else we might want to be. I don't mean to preach, but I have been noticing the same thing with those around me, and hanging out in bed has given me lots of time to think! I, for one, am so amazed that you are back to work and your routines -- you should be proud of yourself for how far you have come! Horray!
That said, I know it's hard as well for our partners and families and friends to care for us. Maybe you can find some way to let your DH know how appreciative you are that doesn't require a lot of stamina on your part -- maybe he'd like a boys night out? Or a chance to talk about what he's been going through? My DH has been great, but I've had to catch myself from being bossy sometimes when he's not doing things in the perfect (ha ha) way I would if I could...
Anyway, you hang in there -- 110% will come soon...
Katherine

One Month Post-Op - Am I where I need to be in my recovery?
Thank you Katherine. I have actually been back to work since Jan 26th for half-days and have just started full-time and semi-regretting that decision. As I stood to get ready for work this morning, I wondered what the heck I was doing, why was I not in bed recovering...but then my tough side said because you are needed at work and you have to go back sometime - no better time than the present!
My DH is totally devoted to family and rarely does boys night out. He is more ready for our weekend...sure hope I can live up to all the anticipation and excitement and it does not turn into a snorefest!

One Month Post-Op - Am I where I need to be in my recovery?
Hi Becky
I'm amazed at how well you are doing! You aren't even five weeks out from your surgery and look at everything you're doing. It's no wonder you're tired. I see you had an LSH and many women heal up a little faster from those, but not all, and the fact remains that you had an internal organ removed.
I hope you'll not be too hard on yourself. If anything I would tell you, you should plan to come home and need to rest for a while if you're going to work and shop and do all that. I had more done that you, but I couldn't have done anything close to what you're doing right now at four weeks. I couldn't even do the groceries by myself at that time, let alone go to a job and work for 7 or more hours.
Give yourself permission to be tired, please. I think in the next few weeks you're going to see big improvements, but right now your body is sending you a message that it's just not ready for all this. If you can, slow it down a notch. Keep us posted on your progress. You will heal and feel so much better, give it time.
's, Rita

One Month Post-Op - Am I where I need to be in my recovery?
Hi Becky,
You are doing so well! You really need to pat yourself on the back. On top of the pat, and since you are doing so much. I think you need to remember to pamper the princess when you get home. I hope you can find a happy middle
Friday will be my 7 week, and I still find myself tired and pushig through it. I have been go,go,go since three weeks post op TAH/BSO. Not by choice, as my son was in the hospital for 8 days. A Mom has to do what Super Woman can't lol! Then it was, well clients are calling and I need money. I do hair. Do I tell them to find a new Stylist? No. I say hey I can fit you in next week(5 weeks post op) LOL. I was back a few hrs a day at five weeks. I am not a nap person either. I only took maybe 4 naps in my recovery. Now by 6pm I am yawning. If only I could sleep.
Best Wishes

One Month Post-Op - Am I where I need to be in my recovery?
Becky:
I, too, just passed my four week mark (47 yo, TAH and retocele repair, kept ovaries 1/13.) I am back to work full time and also have clients that I'm afraid would go elsewhere if I didn't get back to their jobs (which were in mid construction when I had the surgery. I'm an architect.)
I didn't have an easy time post op. I had bad constipation and hemmoroids which kept me miserable for the first post op week. Then I had fluid collection on one side and pain. Nothing too serious but it dragged me down a lot. I see a big difference this week, but I sound a lot like you. I am still very tired. I worked for 8 hours yesterday and then went to lie down 'for a minute' and woke up 3 hours later! I am very impatient with my lack of energy (and sometimes dizziness) but I think we need to be patient and rest whenever we can. My advice is to not do anything you don't really have to do. No extra cleaning or cooking. (House can be messy and kids can have pizza for a few more wks.) I don't know if it's normal to still be so tired, but I see that that's what most people are saying. Lucky you that you are at least cleared to have sex. (You just have to stay awake for how long, about an hour? and then you can nap!!!) I don't know when I'll see that as the stitches in the vagina are still healing from the retocele repair. Still have yucky discharge. I do wish I knew when that was going to end. My head is way ahead of my body. I need to work more and would even like to have sex, but my body is not cooperating!
Hope this helps you, Becky.

One Month Post-Op - Am I where I need to be in my recovery?
Becky,
We had our surgery on the same date. I am with you with everything you said. I went back to work 1/2 days yesterday. I came home wiped, and was locked out. My mom has my keys from being here after surgery. I had to drive to my kids school to get keys. I got a tad grumpy and my DH just did not get how tired I was. When I got up today I had more swelly belly then last week.
Just keep thinking of all the little things you are doing. That is what I have been doing. I hope you have a great weekend. It sounds like you and DH have planned some much needed together time, and that will help the whole Feel better attitude.
