Upcoming hysterectomy 5/6: Nerves

Scheduled for a hysterectomy in two weeks, I'm nervous! I have a 10 cm cyst on my right ovary and will be having abdominal surgery. I really don't know much about hospitals as I've never had an op before.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/6: Nerves

Hi!
My hysterectomy was the first surgery of my life. I was a nervous wreck. It is normal to be nervous before a major surgery. Just keep in mind that the people performing your surgery are professionals and they do surgeries everyday. Write down any questions and ask them when you have your pre op...when you talk to the anesthesiologist ...and the Doctor before the surgery. They can ease your mind. You are having the surgery for a reason. To get rid of the pain and the cyst. Good thoughts are going out for you.

I was also in the same boat. I really had no clue what to expect. My dr did a fairly good job of preparing me, but the details worried me. Everyone in the hospital was so kind and helpful. Everyone who would have any involvement at all with my surgery came in, talked to me, introduced themselves and told me what their roles were. My dr came in an checked on me and joked around with me a little to relax me. It will be over before you know it and I would guess that is going to be much less awful than you are imagining. In my case, once I got to my room, I was alert and feeling good. I expected to be in pain and feeling awful and had told my husband to go home as soon as he saw me after surgery. I knew that if I felt awful I wouldn't want anyone around. I woke up feeling really good and ended up grateful that my husband stuck around as I was bored to death. Wishing you a smooth surgery and as easy a recovery as I had!

My hysterectomy was my first surgery too, and I was really anxious about it. But it turned out to be like one of my coworkers described to me, that it is just like you blink and the whole thing is over without you having any experience of any time lapse. So for me I was chatting to the nurse and then that very same second I opened my eyes in my hospital room with no feeling that any time had gone by (whereas really it was 6 or 7 hours later).

Hi Siggy to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

All of your emotions, fears, nerves and feelings you are having are perfectly normal. This is one tough surgery to face and digest.

Here is an article that may provide information to you:
If Your Hysterectomy is Your First Surgery | Parts 1, 2 and 3

Also know that the doctors and nurses will take very good care of you and they will watch over you. Probably at no other time are you the center of such attention. They have gone to extra schooling and training just to be in the OR. While it is your first surgery, they have done many surgeries.

Above all, know that you are not alone - never on this site.
