adeno and hysterectomy

I'll try for a short version my story. I have had heavy, long periods my whole life. Periods seem to have gotten worse about 5 years ago. Had an ablation 1 1/2 years ago that did not work. I had been on my period for over 30 days when they did the ablation. About 8 months ago doc did a exploratory surgery and said it seems like I have adeno. Did some vaginal ultrasounds before and after and didn't find anything unusual. No fibroids, nothing unusual in my uterus or ovaries. I did some online research and I have "classic" adeno symptoms. I now have very difficult periods, heavy and painful. I also have cramp-like pain all month. I just went in for a consult to schedule a hysterectomy and doc said they'll need to do a bladder sling too with a urologist. This would all be done at the same time. I really was surprised by this, as I don't seem to have a problem with urine leakage. She said I would after the surgery if they don't do the sling. Is this common? I was nervous enough about having one surgery, but to now have to have two. Even at the same time, it's just freaking me out. I forgot to say that I am overweight and wondered if just losing weight would help. Any help would be appreciated!!

Re: adeno and hysterectomy

hsanders--

I'm sorry you are having problems at all. If it were me, I'd get another opinion. At least see a urologist--or THE urologist--who may be the one involved in the decision.

I'd also ask, way in advance, exactly what type of sling they are discussing putting in. As one who had a large bladder sling put in--and then removed in MANY piecemeal surgeries--I am leery when I hear of surgeons who are eager to put them in. Mine was made of polypropylene, by the way. I've done just fine without it. My prolapsed bladder was repaired after having it removed by using just stitches in an older fashioned anterior colporrhaphy. Yes, those can and are done every day.

I actually had a reason to put in the sling, too because I was having incontinence and I still regret having had it because of my later complications.

Most slings do not cause erosion but the ones that do can cause so many problems that one has to ask, 'Why put them in and take the risk?'

I hope you can get all the information you need to make the best decisions for you.

Hi hsanders.... If it's not broke, don't fix it! I agree with OrahDeb: get another medical opinion.

I am sending huge cyberhugs
