how old were you when you had your first mammogram?
I am 31. Both of my refuse to do a mammogram until I am 35. I have had a tah/bso and I have very strong family history of breast cancer. My mothers mother twice first time at 36. My mother has had many lumps removed everything with her has been begnin so far. My mothers sister went in for what she thought was an ingrown hair and turned out to be advace stages of breast cancer. It has since (3years of treatment) moved to her lungs, brain, and they found 2 spots on her spine this week. My 1st cousin was diagnosed at 26 while pregnant. My aunt is very very concerned and wants me to do everything I can to at least get an ultrasound done. My Md says she does not beleive breast cancer "runs" in a family. My gyn told me if we do a mammogram to early I would get false readings. My concern is now when all the blood clots I have developed disolve I would like to try Premarin again. I felt great for the few weeks I was on it. But again that increses my risk. My Dr said 1 in 10,000 but I think with all my other factors I can not be to careful. My question is at what age did you get your first screening? I feel I need to push the issue with my
Thanks girls!!
Best wishes

how old were you when you had your first mammogram?
Hi Misty,
We are almost neighbors! I live just a few miles northwest of you in Boca. Anyway I had my first baseline mammogram at age 35, but fortunately I have no breast cancer in my family. Starting at age 40, I have had annual mammograms. My mother has had 2 scares which turned out to be benign.
I don't blame you for being concerned with a family history of a grandmother, aunt and cousin. From what I have read, there is a greater concern if the history is in an immediate relative such as mother or sibling. I agree with you to insist on earlier screening, you are only 4 years younger than the recommended age. I agree you cannot be too careful. Good luck.

how old were you when you had your first mammogram?
I was 18 years old. I became pregnant with my 1st DS when I was 17 yrs old and during my pregnancy the DR found a small pea size lump in my breast. Within 2mos it was the size of a half dollar. I had to have surgery while I was 5 mos pregnant to remove the lump. I was awake and they just froze my chest to remove it. Luckly it was not cancerous. But I have had a mamogram every year if not 2xs a year since then along with ultra sounds. After my 3rd operation for the same thing the DR told me I have fiber cystic mastitus (spelling?)And that he cpuld not remove all of them or my chest would look like a checker board. So they are only removed if they start togrow or give me trouble. My mother had a dbl mastectomy when she was 38.. Tweny years ago that was what they did. But she did not have cancer. My grandmothers both did however.
RE:My gyn told me if we do a mammogram to early I would get false readings.
I would speak to my family doctor and see what he/she has to say.
The only time I had a false reading was at the same time I was haveing my period and it showed something. They did a ultra sound prior to the scheduled surgery and found nothing so last operation was canceled, the doctor said must have been a oil sack, they develop during the cycle and then absorb into the blood stream. So prior to hyst I never did mamogram during my cycle again.
Sorry so long....

how old were you when you had your first mammogram?
I had my first mammogram when I was 27 because I developed a large lump. I was nursing my son at the time and it turns out it was a lump of milk (cheese? LOL). I don't think I had another until I was 40, but I have no family history.

how old were you when you had your first mammogram?
Hi Misty,
I had my first mammogram when I was 35. At that time they called it a baseline (maybe they still do now also) and then once a year after age 40.
However, that was many years ago. I think that women now a days are much more aware of their bodies and do take advantage of all tests and exams that they can. I work with lots of girls your age and they all have had mammograms already.
Does your insurance need a script from your doctor to have one done?? If not, you can just go ahead and do it on your own. I know that I was always able to. I never needed a referral.
Good luck to you and with your family history your doctor would be foolish not to have you get one even for just peace of mind.

mamograms
Hi Sisters,
I had my first mammogram in my midteens after finding a lump under my arm. I have always had very lumpy, uncomfortable breasts. I had a painful lump while nursing my 2nd child when I was 28 and had a mammogram. Since I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 31, I have had yearly mammograms. Because of my having already had a related cancer and because of a strong family history of breast cancer, I was finally able to get BRCA1 testing and came out positive. I am scheduling a preventive mastectomy for this summer. It is difficult to get medical professionals to take young women seriously when they are trying to get screened for cancer, but it is very important, because delays can lead to late diagnoses. With my ovarian cancer, the doctors were not looking carefully at me and taking my symptoms seriously because I was so young. This attitude about young women not being at serious risk for cancer is what caused me to be diagnosed at stage 3c, instead of a lesser stage.
There are some places where you can get free mammograms, and if your doctor is giving you a difficult time, maybe that could be an alternative.
Hugs,
Twisted Sister

how old were you when you had your first mammogram?
I was 30 years old when I had my first mammogram. My maternal aunt had breast cancer, so I guess my GYN felt I should have one. Lo and behold I had a suspicious area which ended up being needle biopsy, everything was benign. I have had a mammo done annually since then (i'm 44). Now that I 've been diagnosed with ovca, I will have one every 6 months for awhile. Also, my sister had breast ca 6 years ago.

I had my first when I was 34. I was incredibly paranoid after my mom died of breast cancer, so the doctor agreed to my having one.
Yes, at that age we may get false results; HOWEVER, after I had that first one, my doctor started asking for one every year so he could compare results from one year to the next. Any significant changes would be detected and investigated more thoroughly.

how old were you when you had your first mammogram?
If I remember correctly, I was 43. (No cancer generally or BrCa in my family.) I don't think I ever got an order from any male gyn I saw. I first saw my wonderful female gyn (retired a few years ago -- boo hoo) when I started having serious problems that led to my TAH / BSO. Had the TAH in March '91. Annual gyn check-ups have always been in October. So that means my first mammo would have been in October '91 at age 43.
