Upcoming hysterectomy 5/13: Hospital Stay?

Hello Everyone. This is my first post. I am schedule to have my LAVH for Subtotal hysterectomy due to chronic pelvic pain for years and very heavy painful periods with other symptoms, on Friday, May 13th @ 7:30am. I was wondering if anyone had the same surgery and had to stay in the hospital or did your doctor send you home the same day? My doctor was saying he might keep me int eh hospital overnight. I will ask him for sure when I go see him on Tuesday, May 10th.

Re: Hospital Stay?

I haven't had my surgery yet, scheduled for May 16th, but was told since my surgery is at 1:45pm I will most likely be spending the night. If mine was early as yours is, I would be allowed to go home the same day. I think a lot depends on if you are able to get up and walk around, empty your bladder and such.

Re: Hospital Stay?

Hi and welcome,

I had lots more extensive surgery than you will need, happily for you - ugh - so my stay was several nights.

Here is a good article with general guidelines:

How Long Will My Hospital Stay Be?

See if you can get a better idea from your doctor. Some gals feel more comfortable preparing a small overnight bag, just in case.

Hugs and best of luck.

PS: Here are packing tips just in case:

Re: Hospital Stay?

I had LAVH, kept ovaries on 4/14. I did not have to stay overnight but did have to met some benchmarks in recovery before I was released. I had to have pain under control, eat and keep food down, and go to the bathroom. Every doctor is different though, so it will depend on how the surgery itself goes.

(((MrzSpecial)))

You may wish to double check the surgery type with your doctor as a LAVH is a total hysterectomy, meaning the cervix is removed. A "sub-total" is a partial hysterectomy which leaves the cervix in place.

Hope that helps!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/13: Hospital Stay?

MrzSpecial,
I had a total hysterectomy and stayed overnight in the hospital. In my case I had tearing when they removed my uterus and they had to pack it and put a catheter in. They wouldn't let me go home the next day until I could urinate and I was eating and up and walking the evening that I had surgery. Sending best wishes your way.
