I am facing hysterectomy bcs of a prolapsed uterus with fibroids and as a "DES" baby. I cant seem to find any articles on what happens to women who have aleady gone thru natural menopause and then have a hystorectomy. Also, I am curious if there is anyone else who is a DES baby

Hi paddycake There isn't one pat answer to what happens when a woman who has already gone through natural menopause has a hysterectomy - and I assume you meant also has her ovaries removed, right? Because if the ovaries are retained and are still working, there would obviously be no effect.

Here's a link to the most recent thread where this was discussed:

I wasn't a DES baby, but I know there have been some women here who have been.

I'll try to let you know... I have been thru menopause. I am 54 .. was wondering if you & I were the same age because of your name.
I do not know if I was a DES baby, but hopefully the link surferbabe talked about is the one I saw yesterday.. My surgery is in 2 days and I am getting very nervous because I had some major depression problems 2 years ago and definitely don't want to go there again. I will not be able to have hormone therapy because of family history of cancer. Best of luck to you.

Hi,

I'm not a DES baby but I had already gone through natural menopause (without any HRT) before I had my SAH with both ovaries removed. In my case, I didn't have the mood swings or emotional issues after the surgery that some women who had a surgical menopause seemed to have.

I had been having occasional mild hot flashes at night from while I was in menopause and I still occasionally get them.
Physically, my recovery seems to run along the same path as those who had their hysterectomy before they had reached menopause.

I'm six weeks out, back to work and feeling almost back to normal. My only restriction from my doctor is that I can't start back to weight training until 12 weeks out, but I can do yoga and pilates again now.

I was also already thru menopause before surgery.Everything was removed at surgery. I have had my 6 week exam and have been given the green light for everything. I have never taked HRT and my Dr. say I will not need to take any. The surgery has not negatively affected any aspect of my life, and amazingly better in sexual intimacy. So there is still life after surgery for us mature ladies. God Bless, see you on the other side

I had my surgery 2 weeks ago. I had my last period about 8 years ago at age 52. I don't know what a DES baby is but I'll be looking that up right away.

I never had any problems with menopause and took HRT for only about 6 months at the doctor's insistance and then the link to heart problems was announced and I elected to stop as both of my parents died of heart disease. The genes are not in my favor on this one. I did not have any problems. I also have had absolutely no problems with my recovery from my TVH.

I'll let you know about the changes if any in my sex life when I get the go ahead but I expect that it will still be as good as ever. I'm already feeling like its been too long already.

Good luck. Keep asking questions.

I am 55, had just gone one year without period in Oct, then I find a 18" ovarian cyst and undergo TAH/BSO at the end of Nov. 07. With everything removed, the only symptons I am having are some hot flashes and trouble sleeping. I am not doing any HRT for now, I am going to see how things go. So far so good. Not having any unusual mood swings (more than normal) Went back to work at 7 weeks post-op, having some abdominal pain, but doc says that is normal. Taking it one day at a time.
