a bit nervous

I am scheduled for a TAH on 11/6 and I am a bit nervous about it. I have MS and am somewhat concerned that the surgery ( or anathesia) will cause my MS symptoms to worsen. Also, I had surgery last year which involved a long recovery period and am hoping this one will not prove as long. I have read a lot of the posts and all the support and helpful information provided on this website is great. I am glad all of you are here! Thanks for listening!

Wendy

First of all I want to say you are not along in the nervous department. I am scheduled Nov. 5th for TAH and the nerves have started to set in. As for the MS I would speak with your DR and make sure all your questions are answered. I am also praying for a quick recovery. I had a C Section 10 years ago and after the first week the pain wasen't so bad, but I am 10 years older now and not looking forward to it. But we all recover at different rates. Just make sure you take it easy and listen to your body!!!!! Good luck and try and stay busy before the surgery so you don't worrie so much.

A bit nervous

HI Wendy,

I am also scheduled for a TAH/BSO on 11/6. I am actually pretty calm at this point. I have testing next Tuesday and then the pre-op appointment on the 5th. I really have it pretty easy because my husband is home on medical leave and is a wonderful helper. I am trying to do all that I can now to prepare the house, etc.

You will do fine and I agree that you need to listen to your body. While I am telling you this, I will have to remember it also.

Wendysue and Bobsie....we are hyster twins! I too am having a TAH on the 6th, and like you Wendy, I'm getting nervous and anxious about it. I can only imagine the extra concerns that you have with your MS and all. Have you talked to your primary doctor about this and what to expect? I'm sure that he/she would be able to answer a lot of questions that you have about it all.

The next 12 days are extremely busy ones for me, but rather than helping to relax me, this causes me to get stressed! I am bipolar, so when the stresses build up, my mood swings go totally out of whack. I guess that is my biggest fear about the surgery....I'm hoping that I won't fall into a depression.

Wendy and Bobsie, best of luck to you on the 6th....I'll be thinking of my hyster twins and looking forward to seeing you on the other side!!

hugs,
Windy

To Dawn, Bobbi, and Windy:

Thanks very much for your support and encouragement. I wish you all well in your surgeries on 11/5 and 11/6. I agree that keeping busy is helpful. I am trying to get things organized around my apartment for after my surgery. I am single and don't have any family, so my friends will be helping me out afterwards. They are great and keep assuring me it is not an imposition ( and that they offered!), but I am not too good at letting people take care of me. ( I do better when it is the other way around.) I have spoken with my neurologist and he said that since this surgery is necessary, there is no reason to worry about exacerbating MS because if it is going to happen, it is unavoidable, and I will deal with whatever happens. I know that I will be pleased once the recovery period is completed and there is no more severe pain and excessive bleeding from large fibroids, but it's the path from here to there that I don't exactly relish! Well, thanks again, ladies, for your kind and wise words. I will be sending my good thoughts your way and wishing you well. Take care. All the best.

WOW what a coincidence

I also am scheduled for a total hysterectomy, ovaries too (not to good at the acronyms) on 11/6 and I also have MS. I have been giving myself Avonex shots for about 3 years and have not had an exaserbation since then. I am also worried that the surgery will send me out of remission. I have 2 large ovarian masses 11.5 centimeters and another that is 9.5 centimeters. I had a CA125 test that was in the 500s. I am also scared. I try not to think the worst but it is not easy.

I'm sure everything will work out fine for both of us. MS happens at strange times. Nothing can be happening in my life and all of a sudden I get symptoms. So who knows if this will make it worse. Let me know how you are doing. I'm sure it will all work out fine take care.

I don't know the first thing about MS, but with a TAH it's often possible to do the surgery with a spinal, instead of general anethesia. You might ask your doctor if that would be less risky. I had all kinds of other reasons for going with a spinal, and I'm glad I did.

(You can click the little "www" button at the bottom of my message for the whole story on my surgery w/spinal.)

Best of luck!

Hi Nanners1

It is quite a coincidence that we both have MS and will have our total abdominal hysterectomies on the same day! I have been on betaseron for one year and have RR MS, but have not gotten to a remitting phase yet in the past year. I wish you all the best on your surgery and I will think good thoughts your way.

to Linda:

Thanks for your good wishes and helpful info. on the use of a spinal as an alternative. I am talking with my doctor about some of my options tomorrow at my pre-op appt., as a matter of fact.

Take care and thanks again for all the support. This is a terrific message board!
