4 days post hysterectomy - How much is too much?

I had a hysterectomy on Tuesday and I'm feeling pretty good today. A little sore, but not too bad. Only taking pain meds at night. I'm tired of being in the house and I'm ready to go do something!

Question is, how much activity is too much? Think a quick trip to the grocery store by myself would be OK?

I'd worry you'd get there and overdo it. Then you still have to get home. I'd wait at least a week and talk to your dr at follow up.

If you are taking pain meds at night, you shouldn't be driving.

Take a 10 minute walk outside. See how you feel.

Go with a friend to the store.

4 days post op is pretty early to be going and doing by yourself.

Re: 4 days post hysterectomy - How much is too much?

I did my first walk outside at four days. I went out and walked around the block, then rested. I felt really good, so I went back out and walked around *two* blocks. That felt good too.

No need to stay in the house. :-)

Re: 4 days post hysterectomy - How much is too much?

I'm also going stir crazy, I have been taking short walks outside, and also drove myself to vote on Tues which would have been 6 days post op. I feel good while getting out but night time it seems like I have to start at square one again, I'm so sore for it being 10 days now. Somedays I feel worse than I did just a few days after surgery. I have to keep reminding myself the dr would not have given me this much time to heal if it wasn't neccesary. Hope you all have a speedy recovery

It's normal to feel better in the mornings when you've been lying down all night, worse in the evenings after your core muscles have been working against gravity most of the day as you sit, stand and walk.

I wouldn't worry about soreness in the evenings. I'd worry if you were still just as sore the next morning.

Re: 4 days post hysterectomy - How much is too much?

I'm feeling depressed & irritated at being stuck in the house. I hate being so dependent on others, especially when no one else in the house can cook anything! Uhg. The loneliness & isolation is burtal. I have no idea how I'll get through 6 weeks of recovery. Sorry for the rant. I just have no one to talk to or complain to.

I'm sorry for your frustration. It is hard for me to feel so dependent too. My 22 yo son and husband say kind things and my husband may sit and watch a movie with me but nobody here is cooking either. I made some meals in advance and that and pizza is what we've been eating. But I have zero appetite so they are the ones that are suffering. I have healthy soups and some fresh fruit so I'll get by. My daughter called and yelled at my husband telling him to take better care of me but she's had things to do too. I am starting to get pretty resentful. I feel like it's not too much to ask for them to expend even a little interest in hanging out with me instead of getting up yesterday and going fishing for four hours and coming home to take a nap instead of doing anything for me. But I honestly didn't expect much different.

Re: 4 days post hysterectomy - How much is too much?

I'm 13 days post op and I felt well enough to go to church at 6 days. And then went to my kids' basketball and volleyball games at 7 days (but they did get me a soft arm chair to sit in there!). I was moving slow and still sore but not so much I felt I needed to stay home. I did not drive though (and still haven't).
I'd say if you feel up to it, go ahead, but I don't think you should drive yet.

Re: 4 days post hysterectomy - How much is too much?

There is no reason that you have to be stuck in the house, why not go outside and take a walk? Or if you are cleared to drive, do a quick errand or two? If you aren't cleared to drive, could a friend/neighbor/relative pick you up for lunch? Or a little walk in the mall? It will be a morale booster to get out, just don't go crazy until you see how you do. I went to a museum, the mall, the supermarket, out to lunch several times and to get my nails done all in the first 2 weeks. If nothing else, sit outside or take a walk if the weather allows.
