Post op day 1

Well it's over. Yesterday was really rough. I had a lot of pain and nausea post op but finally got that settled last evening. I've been up and about today with no problems. Just one problem; can't pee now that they removed my catheter. Ugh!

Hoping to go of home today.

Re: Post op day 1

I also had lots of nausea right after too. I am glad you are feeling better. Every day it improves and you are closer to total recovery.

I had nausea & vomiting from past surgery & told the anesthesiologist this. He gave me Emend tablet & Transderm Scope patch which prevented it. I was also sent home on Zofran tablets because I get nauseous from the pain medications .

I had a hard time peeing. Get an ice pack and place on lower pelvic area. Your bladder may be swollen. I did that and within 30 minutes, I was like a fountain that never stopped. It's worth a try, right?

Re: Post op day 1

I got a pain patch behind my ear before surgery and it helped me a lot.
It took me a little while to pee after they removed my catheter too, but it will happen

Hey haglips, welcome to the other side. Sorry you're having an issue in the pee dept. Try running the tap in the bathroom as the sound of running water can help stimulate things. Good luck and fingers crossed they let you out soon.......

I also had a cyctocele repair. My nurse told me I most likely have a lot of swelling which I am up dealing with. I was able to void about 500 ml before leaving hospital today but I'm still not able to empty my bladder. It took about 10 trips to the bathroom to get out what I did. Ugh!

I'm going to do that. I've tried heat like my nurse suggested. A warm bath soak relieved the discomfort but not enough. She thinks I'm swollen too. It's worth a try.

FYI, Scopolamine Transdermal skin patches sometimes applied behind the ear to prevent nausea and motion sickness can cause URINARY RETENTION. I had a Scopolamine patch applied pre-surgery. My Foley catheter was in for four days as I underwent partial removal of my left kidney for cancer (renal cell carcinoma), which was immediately followed by TAH/BSO. I could not urinate on my own within six hours of Foley catheter removal, so had to be straight-cathed...ugh Kidney surgeons were very unhappy with amount and color of that urine, especially since I was receiving massive amounts of IV fluids and IV antibiotics. The Scopolamine patch was removed and I was given another six hours to urinate on my own, which I managed to do exactly six minutes prior to the time deadline...whew. In my case, it was probably a combination of things...having undergone two major abdominal surgeries in the same day, having the Foley catheter in for four days (bladder got lazy), and maybe, the effects of the Scopolamine patch. I used the running water trick, as well as leaning forward for a bit, then easing back and raising my feet up on tiptoes. It also helped to blow out as the urine stream started and continued as it seemed to help relax everything down there. Hope this helps and good luck!
