Embolization (UFE) concern
I am a 48 year old woman that has been diagnosed with Fibroids. From my doctor I am down to the options of hysterectomy, myomectomy and embolization. While doing some research on embolization I noticed that in a lost of cases the problems reaccurred. My question is did the syptoms come back gradually or was it a more sudden problem. I have been checking with the family history and both my mother and a half sister went through menopause by 50 I'm not sure I want to go through major surgery at this time. I need to make an appointment to go back and talk with my doctor but I felt the need to know as much as possible about my options before then.

Embolization (UFE) concern
Hi I had the UAE April 04. In August my periods seemed 60 percent lighter. But in October they got heavier, but not as heavy. My ultrasound and cat scan showed it didn't get smaller.
Have you heard about the imagery guided ultra sound? It has been FDA approved and you go in a MRI machine for up to 3 hours and they zap your fibroid away.

Embolization (UFE) concern
I had UFE in Feb 05. Before the procedure I had extremely heavey periods and the bleeding never stopped between periods even on BCPs. After the procedure everything was fine for several months. Toward the end of summer my periods became irregular, and close together. I went back on the pill in the fall. The first pill did nothing to regulate the bleeding. I went on Seasonale in Nov. (the BCP that is taken for 12 weeks and then one week off for a period)Everything was fine for the first 3 weeks and then I started spotting, which is common when your body is adjusting to Seasonale, but I started bleeding &cramps in week five and I'm in week 9 now and the cramps and bleeding continue. It's fairly light bleeding although I do need to use tampons. It's nothing like what I was going through before UFE but it's not how I want to live for the next five years until I'm the age my mom was when she stopped having periods. I have no idea if it will get worse.

Embolization (UFE) concern
I have posted info here about having success with the UFE. However after a little more than a year, I also started having problems again - I gradually noticed more bleeding before it finally was just as bad as pre-UFE.
I decided to have a consultation with a different IR - far more experienced than the one who did my first UFE and in fact one of the physicians who participated in the initial studies of this procedure in the US.
In his opinion the first IR "underembolized" or in other words did not use enough particles for the size of my fibroids/uterus. He felt a repeat of the procedure would be worthwhile. I ended up having this IR do it - rather than my original IR who did not complete the first procedure successfully. I did this even though it meant traveling out of state. I only had this done in November so probably too soon to say but I can see definite differences from the first time around. For one thing I haven't had a period since - which he said could happen 15% of the time in women my age - and can also happen with other procedures like D&C. I also can feel that the fibroid is much smaller - which I did not notice the first time. So, so far so good - my main problem was bleeding so I have to say I'm in hog heaven with no periods since November!!
My personal opinion is that a number of cases of UFE failure may be due to circumstances like mine. More IRs are doing the procedure now and their success rate may not be as good - until they have more experience. This is not their fault - just the way things work.
Based on my experience though, I would investigate the IR very closely if you look into this. My first IR had done about 100 of these - the second one had done over 2000. My opinion - and this is just my opinion - is that you should find someone who has done hundreds of UFEs if not over 1000 if you can find that type of person in your area or make your way to someone like that.
Overall though I think this is a great option because at least for me the recovery was quick (about a week) and I had no complications. So though I have gone through it twice, it has still been less disruptive for me than surgery would have been. On the other hand if you are open to the idea of a hysterectomy, once you're done, you're done - provided you don't have any longer term complications to deal with.
Good luck with your decision!

Embolization (UFE) concern
I want to thank all of you for giving me more information to think through. I hadn't heard of the imagery quided ultra sound so that is something else to look into. I haven't even found out if I am a candidate for this procedure but am looking into it because I would like to avoid surgery if at all possible.

Embolization (UFE) concern
Yea if I would have known about the Ultrasound imagery guided "fibriod zapper" I think I would have done that instead of UAE.
UAE was very painful, the cramps. But I did have really high hopes for it. With the Ultra sound imagry the fibroid is gone right a way and the procedure takes up 3 hrs and you go home same day.
